1. Wed, Oct 21, 9-11am: Scientists Teaching Science pedagogy workshop

Please join us for our "Scientists Teaching Science" pedagogy workshop on Wednesday, October 21 from 9-11am to learn about the best practices in teaching science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Breakfast will be provided.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Barbara Houtz, science educator, science curriculum developer, trainer for K-20 teachers in science, engineering and literacy, and instructor for the Scientists Teaching Science online summer course

2. Careers in Science Journalism: Tonight, Oct 20, 8pm: My Life As...Pulitzer Prize Winners Bill Dedman and Pam Belluck

Interested in learning more about careers in science journalism?

Come hear and meet one of the most highly-accomplished couples in American journalism. Pam Belluck, a health and science reporter for the New York Times, won a Pulitzer Prize this year for her coverage of Ebola. Her husband, Bill Dedman, currently an investigative reporter at Newsday, won his own Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for a report on racial discrimination by mortgage lenders. He also co-authored the best-selling book Empty Mansions, which rose to number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Both Belluck and Dedman will talk about their careers, their work and life together as part of a special School of Journalism presentation.

3. Advanced Certificate in Children's Literature, Deadline: Dec 1

Ever considered letting out your inner novelist? Thought about writing that children's book?

Applications are closing soon for Stony Brook Southampton's Children's Lit Fellow program. This unique, one-year course of study can gain you a graduate-level Advanced Certificate in Children's Literature along with a submission-ready manuscript and introductions to agents and editors in the children's lit publishing world - all accomplished primarily from home.

The application process is streamlined for SBU staff: If you are a Stony Brook faculty member or administrator, you can be pre-screened for admission by emailing your statement of purpose (identifying yourself as faculty/staff) and a writing sample to me at emma.waltonhamilton@stonybrook.edu by December 1st. If you are accepted, you will hear from me within ten days. Then you will have until December 15 to file an official application through Stony Brook's "Apply Yourself" portal, which has an associated application fee of $100 - but you will only need to do this if you have already been accepted to the program. In addition, as a Stony Brook faculty or staff member, you are eligible to use your UUP tuition waiver to offset the expense of this course. I am happy to provide instructions if you are interested in pursuing this option.

1. Postdocs recruited for NASA-funded study of stress in high achievers

We are seeking graduate and post-graduate Science, Engineering, Education, and Training (STEM) trainees for a research study that examines the relationship between personality, brain functioning, and stress. The study involves a 2 hour in-person visit to Stony Brook University campus for a self-report,biological, and behavioral assessment. Then, you will be asked to complete monthly 30-minute web-based follow-ups over the next 5 months. The research is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and your participation may help NASA improve selection of astronaut candidates for successful long-duration space flight (i.e., travel to Mars). You can earn up to $100 for your participation.
