UPDATE May 27, 2016

Dear Postdocs,

As you may have heard, a new Department of Labor overtime rule will render many postdocs eligible for overtime come December 1, 2016. The Office for the Vice President for Research, Human Resource Services, and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs are reviewing the impact of this change here at Stony Brook, and some initial guidance will be released soon. Watch the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs website for more information.

Also, RSVP now for Resume Bootcamp next Tuesday, on May 31 at 12pm and transform your CV into a resume. Space is still available.

1. Resume Bootcamp, May 31, 12pm

The Graduate Career Association invites you to a Resume Bootcamp on May 21, 12-1pm. The session will be led by Zach Marks, co-founder and COO of Oystir, a free career service for STEM postdocs and grad students.

2. Scientists Teaching Science online course, June 6 - August 14, 2016

This summer, the Center for Inclusive Education is offering "Scientists TeachingScience", an online pedagogy course from June 6 - August 14. The course will be taught by Dr. Barbara Houtz, science educator, science curriculum developer, trainer for K-20 teachers in science, engineering and literacy, and author of three books on effective teaching strategies in science. Participants will learn about active learning, creating course objectives and test items, and finding ways to improve their teaching and assessment techniques for students of all ages.

All participants who complete the course requirements will be eligible for a personal letter of recommendation from the instructor, as well as receive a certificate of completion.

WHEN: June 6 - August 14, 2016

WHERE: ANYWHERE! This asynchronous course is available 24/7 on any web-enabled device and unlike other online courses, one-on-one engagement, personal review of written assignments, and personalized advice on teaching is guaranteed.

1. Science Writing Opportunity with NYAS

The New York Academy of Sciences is pleased to announce the continuation of its Science Writing Associates Program, which gives New York metropolitan area graduate students and postdocs the opportunity to build their writing skills and credentials. Each Associate will attend up to three Academy symposia in his or her area of expertise and will contribute a 1200-1500 word event summary for each symposium, to be featured in the eBriefings on the Academy's website: www.nyas.org/eBriefings.

Areas of coverage include: Life Sciences; Environmental Science and Nutrition; and Science Education, Professional Development, and Public Policy.

2. Bioscience Development and Commercialization Funding Call, Proposals Due: June 16

The Long Island Bioscience Hub has announced the latest Request for Proposals for it's two-tired funding program aimed to help faculty, physicians, surgeons, medical fellows and post-docs develop their academic innovations toward commercial goals. The RFP and one page flyer are attached, and related forms for the funding programs can be found online on the Long Island Bioscience Hub webpage

Those interested in applying are strongly encouraged to contact Drs. Li Liu, Nadia Rana, Tiffany Tsui and/or William Hanes are also available to discuss this Technology Development program. This program is for the development of bio-based technologies, with very specific milestones toward commercialization. It is not a basic science research program.

Deadline for submission is June 16th, 2016. This program will be available twice per year through the next two years, with the next deadline for proposals coming in December 2016.

3. OPA Travel Grants: Apply now for your summer conference travel

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs travel grants are available to support your travel to present your work at a conference or meeting. Submissions are ongoing so long as you submit at least a full month before you travel. Awards can provide up to $1500 to reimburse your actual travel expenses.
