1.Communicating science classes enrollment opens for Spring 2018
Through a special arrangement with the Alda Center for Communicating Science, postdocs
may sign up through the Postdoc Office to take the Alda Center's nationally-renowned
communicating science classes for FREE. Space is limited, with two postdoc spots in
each section of most courses. Postdocs may only take one course per semester.
Start with the core courses: JRN501: Distilling Your Message, and JRN503: Improvisation
for Scientists.
To Register: Email the Postdoc Office at postdocs@stonybrook.edu with your preferred course and
section. Placement is first come, first served. All registrants are expected to attend
and participate in every session.
2.What Can You Be with a PhD? Career Symposium, Nov 4-5 at NYU
Stony Brook has sponsored your attendance at What Can You Be with a PhD?
What Can You Be with a PhD? is the largest career conference in the nation, held every two years. The conference
features speakers on career paths inside and outside of academia and is a key opportunity
for grad students and postdocs to increase their knowledge of the range of career
possibilities before them.
Location: NYU Medical Center, 540 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10016
Dates: Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5
Keynote Speaker: Melanie Sinche, Director of Education for the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine
and author of Next Gen PhD.

3.Present Your Pitch at Wolfietank 2017 on Nov 7
In this third installment of the successful Wolfietank, all Stony Brook faculty, staff,
and students are invited to showcase the next big idea in this pitch competition.
It will give you a chance to highlight your ideas in a unique opportunity in front
of entrepreneurs from the Long Island area. Presenters will be given a few minutes
to deliver your pitch and there will be time for questions, feedback, and advice from
our judges.
Reserve your spot now to compete by submitting ashort application due by October 7, 2017to have their pitch accepted.

4.Share Your Research at SBU Postdoc Spotlight on Nov 16
SBU Postdoc Spotlight is a celebration of the research performed by Stony Brook's
postdoctoral scholars and an opportunity for postdocs to share their cutting-edge
research with colleagues across disciplinary lines.
Spotlight talks are five minutes long and designed like a TED talk to be accessible
to specialists and non-specialists alike. Postdoc speakers will receive individualized
coaching from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and prizes will be
given for the best talks. The Spotlight will be followed by a light reception.

Speaker Information: Speakers must commit to both coaching sessions in advance of the Spotlight. The number
of presentations is limited, so register today!

5.Get Involved and Meet Other Postdocs - Join the Postdoc Advisory Committee!
Want to meet other postdocs outside your department and get involved with creating
postdoctoral community? Join the Postdoc Advisory Committee! The committee meets once
a semester and provides an opportunity to give critical feedback and support to the
Office of Postdoctoral Affairs. You can commit as much or as little effort as you
like.
The next meeting will be in mid-October.

1.NRC Research Associateship Program, Deadline: Nov 15
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine sponsors a number of
awards for postdoctoral and senior researchers at participating federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. These awards include generous stipends ranging from $45,000 - $80,000 per year for
recent Ph.D. recipients, and higher for additional experience. Limited graduate level
awards are available. These awards provide the opportunity for recipients to do independent
research in some of the best-equipped and staffed laboratories in the U.S. Research
opportunities are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and for some of the
laboratories, foreign nationals.
Four annual review cycles: • November; Opens September 1; Closes November 1 • February; Opens December 1; Closes February 1 • May; Opens March 1; Closes May 1 • August; Opens June 1; Closes August 1

1. New Networking Association for International Scientists in NYC area
INet NYC (International Networking in NYC) was founded in 2014 and is run by young volunteer
scientists. It is an organization that aims to provide support and professional development
opportunities for international STEM scientists in the NYC area. It facilitate the
connection of scientists, allowing for the sharing of experiences and the formation
of a strong international peer network. INet NYC organizes professional, networking
and social events that are focused on the challenges and opportunities of international
scientists. The group believes that, by creating a local community, INet NYC can assist
