Join us for the monthly postdoc coffee. Meet other postdocs, take a break from the lab, drink other people's coffee.

What's not to like? 

When: Thursday, March 10, 2016, 3-4pm (the second Thursday of each month!)

2. Sign Up to give a TEDx Talk

Registration just opened for next year's TEDxSBU 2016. This year's theme is "Heads and Tales." Giving a TEDx talk is fantastic experience in communicating to a broader audience. It looks great on your CV and provides a nice video you can later share that shows you in action. Consider nominating yourself!

Now Accepting Nominations Until May 20, 2016. The event will take place on November 4.

Video Required to Apply 
A video clip is required as part of the nomination process. You do not have to give your entire TEDx talk in this video. 

Helpful Hints from the Organizers
  • We do want hard concepts explained for the masses.
  • We do want artistic, musical, theatrical performances and other creative performances.
  • We do want to highlight areas of study that Stony Brook is known for (e.g. anthropology, computer science, engineering, medicine/health sciences, etc.)
  • We do want talks that focus on the expertise and research of the speaker rather than personal experiences. This ensures content that is more informative and thought-provoking.
  • We are not looking for you to pitch a company idea, especially if the idea has no truly inspiring or humanitarian story to accompany it.

3. Making the Leap: A Non-Academic Career Planning and Job Search Boot Camp, March 11 - 12, 2016

The New York Academy of Science is offering its popular non-academic career boot camp this weekend, March 11-12, 2016. Take advantage of that shiny new NYAS membership for a discount on the fee ($175 for member postdocs).

4. Biotech Management Training Bootcamp, July 11-16

ASCB and the Keck Graduate Institute will offer an intensive, week-long course on "Managing Science in the Biotech Industry: An Intensive Course for Students and Postdocs" from July 11-16, 2016, at the Keck Graduate Institute in Claremont, CA. This course will accommodate 50 graduate students and postdocs (international and domestic). The course registration fee is $300, with an additional, optional accommodations package of $500.

The course will introduce PhD scientists to the skills they need to thrive in industry and will expose them to the culture, organizational structures, and practices of life science companies through MBA-style case-based classroom experiences, networking, professional development workshops, and a team-based project. They will learn how academic science is commercialized and gain insight into the way industry views scientific research. The course is designed for advanced graduate students with at least three years of research experience and for postdocs.

The deadline to apply is April 15.

1. New Career Planning Resources: ChemIDP and APA IDP

Several new career planning tools have been launched this week. Both the American Chemical Society and the American Psychological Association have developed online tools to help early career scientists make a concrete plan for their career advancement. You can find them here:

ChemIDP.org: You don't have to be an ACS member to create a login and use the tool. With it you can build an action plan to pursue your career goals and strengthen your skills. The site is new, so if you see any issues, please share with the creators. 

APA's Resource for Individual Development Plans (IDP): A step-by-step process of writing down a plan for career exploration, goal setting and skill strengthening, APA's IDP tool includes video tutorials on the variety of career paths taken by PhDs. This is also a brand new tool, so feedback here.

Finally, some other tools you might consider:

myIDP.sciencecareers.org: An interactive tool hosted by the publishers of Science primarily directed at biomedical scientists. Be sure to complete all steps through to the plan making!

Versatile PhD: A career exploration site with both a STEM side and a Humanities and Social Science side. SBU provides access to both sides, with premium content on the Humanities/Social Science side only. Access our membership portal HERE.

1. Natl Academy of Engineering Video Contest - $25k grand prize

The National Academy of Engineering has announced the 3rd annual Engineering for You Video Contest (E4U3) on Mega Engineering! Most of humankind’s biggest endeavors are mega engineering projects that provide solutions that span disciplines, geographies, and cultural boundaries.

They want 1 to 2 minute videos that (i) introduce a particular mega-engineering project, (ii) highlight its importance/contribution to people and society, and (iii) suggest contributions to its development.

The Grand Prize of $25,000 will go to the most inspiring 1-2 minute video. The E4U3 Video Contest is open for video submissions from March 1, 2016 to May 31, 2016.

1. Have you completed the Postdoc & Research Scientist Info Form?

Each year, Stony Brook is asked to do an accounting of all our postdocs and "non-faculty researchers" to NSF for their annual Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates. To help us with our data collection, we ask you to complete the Postdoc and Research Scientist Info Form, where you can, for example, let us know if you're not a postdoc. 

If you haven't filled it out this year, you still can. The link to the form is HERE.

2. Join the Office of Postdoc Affairs Advisory Committee!

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) is looking for new members of its postdoc advisory committee. The committee meets quarterly to advise the Office on issues pertaining to postdocs. Join now and give input on OPA's upcoming postdoc needs assessment survey and planning for this year's National Postdoc Appreciation Week Sept 19-23, 2016.
