Dear Postdocs,

We'll be holding the monthly postdoc coffee this Thursday at an all new time: November 12th, 3pm, in the Grad School Conference Room in 2401 (Old) Computer Science. Take a mid afternoon break from research to rejuvenate with coffee and snacks and meet up with other postdocs. See you Thursday!

Also, postdoc registration is open for Spring 2016 communicating science classes. Space is limited, so email me to register today.

1. New and Improved Postdoc Coffee! Thurs, Nov 12 at 3pm

Join us on Thursday, November 12th at 3pm for a mid-afternoon break for coffee and snacks to meet and network with your fellow postdocs. New to Stony Brook? This is a great way to meet other researchers outside your department. 

This re-vamping of the monthly Postdoc Coffee will meet on the SECOND Thursday of each month at 3pm. This first coffee will take place in the Grad School Conference Room, in 2401 Old Computer Science.


2. Postdoc Registration Opens: Communicating Science Courses

Want to improve you presentation skills? Brush up your elevator pitch? Prepare for that multi-disciplinary job talk?

Sign up now for communicating science courses from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. Courses are typically 3 hours a week for five weeks, often after hours. Two spots are reserved in most course sections for postdocs free of charge, first come, first served.

Courses: The core communicating sciences courses are JRN 503 and JRN 501. 

JRN 501 COMMUNICATING SCIENCE: DISTILLING YOUR MESSAGE
Students learn to speak clearly and vividly about their work and why it matters, in terms non-scientists can understand. 

JRN 503 COMMUNICATING SCIENCE: IMPROVISATION FOR SCIENTISTS
This innovative course uses improvisational theater techniques to help students communicate more directly and responsively. It’s not about acting; it’s about connecting with an audience.

3. Become a Judge for the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair

The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF; www.lisef.org) is in need of qualified judges (faculty, postdocs, graduate students, engineers with field experience) to help evaluate approximately 400 student projects in over 22 disciplines. Judges are typically asked to evaluate and score between 8-12 projects depending on the category. Judges are needed on either or both days of our fair (Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 and Thursday, March 10th, 2016), with the greatest need on the February 3rd date.

Judging the science fair is a great way to interact with aspiring scientists and engineers and to share your own enthusiasm. It's also a chance to network amongst the judges with other professionals from across Long Island.

Research


1. Postdocs recruited for NASA-funded study of stress in high achievers

We are seeking graduate and post-graduate Science, Engineering, Education, and Training (STEM) trainees for a research study that examines the relationship between personality, brain functioning, and stress. The study involves a 2 hour in-person visit to Stony Brook University campus for a self-report,biological, and behavioral assessment. Then, you will be asked to complete monthly 30-minute web-based follow-ups over the next 5 months. The research is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and your participation may help NASA improve selection of astronaut candidates for successful long-duration space flight (i.e., travel to Mars). You can earn up to $100 for your participation.
