Some career development events are approaching: Planning Your Path to a Satisfying
Career is this Thursday, What Can You Be With a PhD? is Nov 4-5, and the SBU Postdoc
Spotlight is Nov 16th. Plus, Stony Brook Grad Student and Postdoc Photo Contest is now underway!
Postdoc participants may also have the opportunity to help the Postdoc Office develop
a new career mentoring program for postdocs, adapted from the successful PhD Career Ladder Program for graduate students.
2.Communicating Science: A Few Postdoc Spots Left for Spring 2018
Only a few free postdoc spots are left in the core courses from the Alda Center for
Communicating Science.

To Register: Email the Postdoc Office at postdocs@stonybrook.edu with your preferred course and
section. Placement is first come, first served. All registrants are expected to attend
and participate in every session. Postdocs may only take one course per semester.
3.What Can You Be with a PhD? Career Symposium, Nov 4-5 at NYU
Stony Brook has sponsored your attendance at What Can You Be with a PhD?
What Can You Be with a PhD? is the largest career conference in the nation, held every two years. The conference
features speakers on career paths inside and outside of academia and is a key opportunity
for grad students and postdocs to increase their knowledge of the range of career
possibilities before them.

Dates: Saturday, November 4 and Sunday, November 5
Keynote Speaker: Melanie Sinche, Director of Education for the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine
and author of Next Gen PhD.

4.Share Your Research at SBU Postdoc Spotlight on Nov 16
SBU Postdoc Spotlight is a celebration of the research performed by Stony Brook's
postdoctoral scholars and an opportunity for postdocs to share their cutting-edge
research with colleagues across disciplinary lines.
Spotlight talks are five minutes long and designed like a TED talk to be accessible
to specialists and non-specialists alike. Postdoc speakers will receive individualized
coaching from the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, and prizes will be
given for the best talks. The Spotlight will be followed by a light reception.

5.Show your creative side! Graduate Student and Postdoc Photo Contest
All postdocs are invited to participate in Stony Brook's Second Annual Graduate Student
and Postdoc Photo Contest!
At Stony Brook University, we are the curious – the explorers, and the innovators.
For our contest, show us what this looks like in your research and work. How are you
innovating? What inspires your curiosity? Where and how are you exploring? What have
you found?
The contest is open to Stony Brook students currently enrolled in a certificate, master’s
or doctoral program as well as Stony Brook-affiliated postdocs. Judging will take
place in two phases: Finalists will be selected by a panel of Stony Brook students
and administrators; graduate students and postdocs will then vote on the finalists
to identify the winning submission.
1.CASVA A. W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Program, Deadline: Oct 15
This Mellon-funded fellowship supports postdoctoral scholarship in the visual arts
and culture of African Americans, Africa, and the African diaspora at Center for Advanced
Study in the Visual Arts (CASVA) at the National Gallery of Art in DC.
Applicants must have received their PhD before the application deadline, and within
the past 5 years.
3.AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellowships, Deadline: Nov 1
The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) premiere transition
fellowship for PhDs interested in learning more about science policy is now accepting
applications. Placements include executive branch agencies as well as congressional
offices. It's great experience for those wanted to transition into a career policy,
as well as those who want to round out their science education and return again to
research.
Eligible Applicants:U.S. citizens with a doctorate in science or master's in Engineering
4.AAAS Mass Media Science & Engineering Fellowships, Deadline: Jan 15
This 10 week paid fellowship places scientists at media organizations such as the
Washington Post, WIRED, Slate and NPR to work as science journalists for the summer.
Mass Media Fellows use their academic training in the sciences as they research, write
and report today's headlines, while sharpening their abilities to communicate complex
scientific issues to the public. The Fellowship experience broadens the fellow's career
path while increasing the public's understanding of science and technology. Students
and postdocs in science, mathematics and engineering are eligible to apply. We also
place Spanish speaking scientists at Univision and CNN Español.
