Those interested in learning about the business of science and commercialization should take note of two upcoming opportunities. The Center for Biotechnology's Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program is accepting applications through November 27. Also on October 29, the Long Island Bioscience Hub will hold a workshop on commercialization.

Events

1. Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Course: Application deadline Nov 27

The Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program is an innovative, one semester, evening program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Bioscience Industry from target identification through commercial application. This program is targeted toward graduate students and post docs seeking to facilitate commercial activities within their academic labs or enhance their knowledge of the commercial sector in order to transition into non-academic careers.

Created by the Center for Biotechnology, this highly interactive program gives participants the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the development of commercialization strategies around real intellectual property and business issues.

There will be an information session on Wednesday October 7, at 12:00 pm in the Chemistry Building in Room 412. See the link below for details.
Benefits of the program include:

Increase marketability for participants by expanding their education beyond the typical classroom
Hands on work with technologies to advance an invention through to commercialization
Connections made with industry leaders through on going classroom interaction
Access to a network of over 300 program alumni providing career opportunities, mentoring, professional development and social interactions

2. Cold Spring Harbor Scientific Writing Retreat, Dec 2-6

The retreat will be held December 2-6 and is aimed at postdocs and independent investigators who are actively working on professional writing projects such as manuscripts, grant proposals, applications, and research/teaching/personal statements. It will include a mix of formal sessions and less structured, individual writing time. The goal is for participants to make significant progress on their writing projects while improving their written communication skills.

The application deadline has been extended to OCTOBER 19.

Cost: $875 (all-inclusive and includes housing and food; some financial assistance available)

3. Register to attend BNL's Young Researcher Symposium on Nov 17

Consider attending Brookhaven National Lab's (BNL) 4th Annual Young Researcher Symposium and learn about recent research results from postdocs and grad students working at Brookhaven. A great way to expand your scientific network!

4. Commercialization Workshop for Life Sciences, Oct 29

The Long Island Bioscience Hub (LIBH) is hosting a one-day, rapid fire workshop that will provide practical tools used in commercialization as well as strategies to enhance applications for LIBH grant funding.

This session is ideal for faculty, physicians, fellows, post docs and graduate students, especially those who are interested in submitting grant proposals to the Hub.

5. Postdoc Coffee moves to 3pm on Second Thursday of each month, starting November 12th

Join us on Thursday, November 12th at 3pm for a mid-afternoon break for coffee and snacks to meet and network with your fellow postdocs. This re-vamping of the monthly Postdoc Coffee will meet on the SECOND Thursday of each month at 3pm. This first coffee will take place in the Grad School Conference Room, in 2401 Old Computer Science.

1. Regeneron Postdoc Program opens applications

For those interested in a postdoc position in industry that also provides a robust training program, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals is opening applications for its Postdoctoral Training Program. Applications are being accepted through December 15 for positions starting in July 2016.

Research

1. Postdocs recruited for NASA-funded study of stress in high achievers

We are seeking graduate and post-graduate Science, Engineering, Education, and Training (STEM) trainees for a research study that examines the relationship between personality, brain functioning, and stress. The study involves a 2 hour in-person visit to Stony Brook University campus for a self-report,biological, and behavioral assessment. Then, you will be asked to complete monthly 30-minute web-based follow-ups over the next 5 months. The research is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and your participation may help NASA improve selection of astronaut candidates for successful long-duration space flight (i.e., travel to Mars). You can earn up to $100 for your participation.
