The Fall semester kicks off next week, and with it some opportunities for our postdocs as well. Sign up for September's Postdoc Appreciation activities, a picnic on 9/13 and the Spotlight and Postdoc Appreciation Luncheon on 9/17!

Note that there is still space for postdocs in the Alda Center Communicating Science courses, but registration closes for them TOMORROW at 12pm. To register, email postdocs@stonybrook.edu ASAP!

Register to attend the SBU Postdoc Spotlight. The Spotlight will feature short talks from Stony Brook's postdocs on their research and scholarship crafted for a general audience. Come and see a snapshot of the research and discovery performed by our postdoctoral community. 

Following the SBU Postdoc Spotlight talks, we will hold a luncheon for all registered attendees featuring a panel of PhD scientists  working in a variety of careers who will talk about their paths after the PhD. Sign up now!

2. Celebrate Postdoc Appreciation with Postdoc Picnic, Sept 13th, 1-3pm

Join us for postdoc appreciation this month at the Postdoc Picnic on September 13 from 1-3pm at Holtsville Park. Food will be served as you connect with your colleagues, enjoy the park, the nearby playground, and the Holtsville Wildlife & Ecology Center (a little zoo).

3. Postdoc registration for Fall '15 communicating science classes closes TOMORROW, Fri, Aug 21, 12Noon

 
Postdocs are invited to sign up, free of charge, for communicating science classes at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science. These one-credit courses teach the Alda Center's method for connecting with any audience about your science, from colleagues in other departments to your students to your congressman.

Two slots are reserved for postdocs in most of their core classes in each section, so space is extremely limited. YOU MUST REGISTER BY TOMORROW, FRIDAY, AUGUST 21 AT 12 NOON TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT. Some of the sections begin next week.

To register, review the Fall 2015 schedule of classes and email the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs your choice of class and section. Spaces are first come, first served. Postdocs may only sign up for one class per semester. 
 

4. Grant writing class for postdocs and faculty: Oct 2nd


Save the Date: On Oct 2nd, the Office of Vice President for Research will sponsor an all-day seminar on "Write Winning Grant Proposals." Additional details will become available in September, so mark your calendar now.

Date/Time: Friday Oct 2nd, 2015   8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

Presenter: John D. Robertson, Ph.D., Associate Member at Grant Writers’ Seminars & Workshops

This seminar will comprehensively address both practical and conceptual aspects that are important to writing competitive grant proposals. It is appropriate for faculty members and postdoctoral researchers who have had some or little exposure to writing grant applications, either through training / mentoring or personal experience.

1. Mt. Sinai Innovation Partners Internship program: application deadline Aug 21

 
MSIP's Internship Program is designed to engage and educate early-stage scientists, attorneys, and/or business professionals who have strong interests in the process of bringing new therapeutic, diagnostic, medical device or digital health technologies to the worldwide patient population. 

The program includes an educational boot camp where interns will be introduced to technology development and commercialization using a case-study approach, followed by individualized teaching and mentoring experiences in one of five selected tracks: Business Development, Intellectual Property Management, Contracts, Marketing/Entrepreneurship, or Finance and Operations.

Research

1. NASA-funded study seeks postdoc participants as proxy for astronauts

We are seeking graduate and post-graduate Science, Engineering, Education, and Training (STEM) trainees for a research study that examines the relationship between personality, brain functioning, and stress. The study involves a 2 hour in-person visit to Stony Brook University campus for a self-report,biological, and behavioral assessment. Then, you will be asked to complete monthly 30-minute web-based follow-ups over the next 5 months. The research is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and your participation may help NASA improve selection of astronaut candidates for successful long-duration space flight (i.e., travel to Mars). You can earn up to $100 for your participation.
