1. Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Course: Application deadline Nov 27

The Fundamentals of the Bioscience Industry Program is an innovative, one semester, evening program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Bioscience Industry from target identification through commercial application. This program is targeted toward graduate students and post docs seeking to facilitate commercial activities within their academic labs or enhance their knowledge of the commercial sector in order to transition into non-academic careers. 

Created by the Center for Biotechnology, this highly interactive program gives participants the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the development of commercialization strategies around real intellectual property and business issues.

Benefits of the program include:
  • Increase marketability for participants by expanding their education beyond the typical classroom
  • Hands on work with technologies to advance an invention through to commercialization
  • Connections made with industry leaders through on going classroom interaction
  • Access to a network of over 300 program alumni providing career opportunities, mentoring, professional development and social interactions

2. Communicating Science Courses: A few postdoc spots left in Distilling Your Message

If you've thought about taking a class on communication skills, there's still time to sign up for a class for the Spring. The two core classes from the Alda Center for Communicating Science are filling up fast. All the designated postdoc spots are filled for Improv for Scientists, but both sections of Distilling Your Message are available, along with the more advanced classes. See the schedule below for details.

Courses are typically 3 hours a week for five weeks, often after hours. Postdoc slots are free of charge, first come, first served.

3. Become a Judge for the Long Island Science & Engineering Fair

The Long Island Science and Engineering Fair (LISEF; www.lisef.org) is in need of qualified judges (faculty, postdocs, graduate students, engineers with field experience) to help evaluate approximately 400 student projects in over 22 disciplines. Judges are typically asked to evaluate and score between 8-12 projects depending on the category. Judges are needed on either or both days of our fair (Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016 and Thursday, March 10th, 2016), with the greatest need on the February 3rd date.

Judging the science fair is a great way to interact with aspiring scientists and engineers and to share your own enthusiasm. It's also a chance to network amongst the judges with other professionals from across Long Island.

1. L'Oreal Women in Science Fellowship


Applications open on November 30th for the L'Oreal Women in Science fellowship program, which awards five postdoctoral women scientists annually with grants of $60,000 each. Applicants are selected from a variety of fields, including the life and physical/material sciences, technology (including computer science), engineering, and mathematics.

The L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science program recognizes and rewards the contributions women make in STEM fields and identifies exceptional women researchers committed to serving as role models for younger generations.

2. Bio Sciences Adjunct needed immediately at Old Westbury

Looking for a chance to get that elusive teaching experience for your faculty applications?

Old Westbury is looking for an adjunct professor to teach freshman biology next semester. Everything will be provided, syllabus, textbook, etc.

3. Regeneron Prize for Creative Innovation in Biomedicine

Applications are now open for the 4th Annual Regeneron Prize for Creative Innovation, which recognizes creative, "dream project" thinking from one biomedical graduate student and one biomedical postdoc with a $50,000 cash prize. Stony Brook can nominate two graduate students and two postdocs to this national competition.

To apply: Application materials are due to the IREP Office by Monday, January 4, 2016. Applications should be sent via e-mail to Jennifer Green at irep @stonybrook.edu. If you think you will apply, however, please send us an email as soon as you can to let us know.

Applicants need to submit a CV, two-page proposal on their "dream" project, and 2-3 PDFs of publications (SEE GUIDELINES FOR MORE DETAILS).

Research


1. Postdocs recruited for NASA-funded study of stress in high achievers

We are seeking graduate and post-graduate Science, Engineering, Education, and Training (STEM) trainees for a research study that examines the relationship between personality, brain functioning, and stress. The study involves a 2 hour in-person visit to Stony Brook University campus for a self-report,biological, and behavioral assessment. Then, you will be asked to complete monthly 30-minute web-based follow-ups over the next 5 months. The research is funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and your participation may help NASA improve selection of astronaut candidates for successful long-duration space flight (i.e., travel to Mars). You can earn up to $100 for your participation.
