Some new professional development opportunities have arisen for this week, along with the start of Stony Brook's tax clinics, sponsored by the Graduate Student Organization. A number of today's updates are specifically for international postdocs, so check them out.

Plus, meet some other postdocs at the next SBU-BNL Postdoc Meetup this Friday.

The Graduate Student Organization (GSO) has kindly extended their special tax resources for this tax season to all of our postdocs, with some special offerings particularly for international graduate students and postdocs.

TAX CLINICS
When: Friday, February 19th and Monday, February 29th from 9am-11am (March and April dates TBD)
Where: GSO office (SAC 227)

The GSO tax clinics are drop-in opportunities for graduate students and postdocs to ask tax questions of a licensed tax accountant who has worked for many years with SBU's community. The clinics run all season long up until the Federal tax deadline of April 15th, but go early since they get busier over time. Please note that very detailed situations may require a private consultation.

TAX WORKSHOPS FOR CHINESE AND INDIAN STUDENTS/POSTDOCS
Chinese Students & Postdocs: Friday, February 26th, 9am-11am
Indian Students & Postdocs: Friday, March 25th, 9am-11am
Where: SAC 306

Two special workshops on issues specific to taxes from these two large communities at Stony Brook.

ONLINE TAX PREP DISCOUNTS FOR INTERNATIONALS
The GSO has arranged for a limited number of discounts for international graduate students and postdocs to use the online tax preparation service, https://www.sprintax.com. After the discount, the cost is $2 for Federal and $20.95 for State. Please note that only a limited number of people may use this discount, first come, first served.

To take advantage of the discount, you first need to create an account and enter all your information. They should enter SUNYSB2015 for Federal tax and SUNYSB15S5 for State tax in the code box on the ‘Review your order’ page.

2. BNL-SBU Postdoc Meet Up, Feb 19, 8pm

Another Postdoc Meet Up this Friday! Come hang out with other postdocs and students from BNL and Stony Brook. Food and drink available for purchase.

Where: Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub in Miller Place (275 Route 25A, Miller Place)

3. Workshop: Planning Your Path to a Satisfying Career, Feb 22 3:30pm

Planning Your Path to a Satisfying Career is a workshop on career planning held regularly by the IREP Office. This guided workshop will help graduate students and postdocs develop strategies for professional growth by:

Learning strategies to explore a range of careers
Identifying interests and skills relevant to their career goals
Developing an action plan to strengthen skills and pursue their ideal career
Preparing or expanding their Individual Development Plan (IDP)

When: Monday, February 22, 2016, 3:30pm—5:00pm

Where: Wang Room 201

4. Writing Workshop for International Researchers, Feb 18, 6:30pm

The Writing Center will offer a workshop this Thursday for international graduate students and postdocs on "Communicating Specialized Knowledge to General/Outside Audiences."

This workshop will engage participants in exercises for analyzing/understanding the audience, contexts, purposes, types, and means and channels of writing. Participants will be also involved in "translation" exercises, rewriting complex academic texts whose content needs to be communicated to non-specialist audiences in different contexts.

When: Thursday February 18, 6:30-7:30pm
Where: Harriman Hall 137

Speaker: Dr. Shyam Sharma is an Assistant Profession in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric. His scholarship focuses on the writing challenges of international students, particular non-native speakers.

5. New Faculty Panel: "What I Wish I Knew When I Started," Feb 17, 3pm

The Faculty Center is hosting a new faculty panel, "What I Wish I Had Known When I Started" on Wednesday, Feb 17, 3pm in SAC room 304. This panel of tenure-track faculty will share valuable insights on what they've learned, the best advice they received and their thoughts for faculty entering the academy.

Postdocs and senior grad TAs are invited to join this engaging panel discussion, which will be followed by Q & A.

The National Postdoctoral Association maintains a list of funding opportunities that have no citizenship requirements, which means our international postdocs can apply.

Each year, Stony Brook is asked to do an accounting of all our postdocs and "non-faculty researchers" to NSF for their annual Survey of Graduate Students and Postdoctorates. To help us with our data collection, we ask you to complete the Postdoc and Research Scientist Info Form, where you can, for example, let us know if you're not a postdoc.
