Resident Assistant (Undergraduate and Apartment Living)
Resident Assistants (RA) are an integral part of Campus Residences. Students that serve as an RA have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills, make strong connections with other students, and promote diversity and inclusion across their area. Both Undergraduate and Graduate Students have the ability to be RA's in the Residence Hall and Apartment Areas.
Summer Housing Assistant
The Summer Housing Assistant (SHA) is the front line customer service and risk management support role in a residence hall community housing professional, academic, and athletic conferences. They will coordinate the guest registration process (including space preparation and assessment); assist guests with facilities and other related housing concerns; and will be general University ambassadors in providing information about the University and surrounding communities to our housing guests.
Marketing Student Staff
As a Per Diem Marketing Assistant for Campus Residences, you’ll have the opportunity
to create impactful content through photography, videography, and graphic design.
Your work will directly affect over 10,500 residential students, helping to shape
their campus experience. You’ll collaborate closely with the Campus Residences Marketing
Coordinators, as well as the Associate Director and Director of Housing Administration,

Residential Safety Program
At the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters, RSP holds hiring events. Applicants can apply via Handshake. RSP hires on a rolling basis as positions become available, please do not send unsolicited resumes.
RSP positions are field and early staff. As part of their patrols, Field Workers identify and report broken doors, propped doors, broken blue light phones, fire alarms, and potential threats on campus. Additionally, field workers assist with emergency situations on campus, working with the UPD, Fire Marshal, SBVAC, and other residential staff. When RSP walk requests are called, Field Workers are dispatched. Security officers are dispatched during the hours of 4AM – 8AM to assist with any emergency on campus. Early staff patrols residential buildings between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. ensuring campus safety, serving the same role as Field workers. During emergencies, early staff works alongside emergency personnel (Fire Marshal, SB VAC, UPD). At special events like move-in, midnight breakfast, graduation, and others where crowd control is needed, early workers assist.
Residential Tutoring Center Tutor
Tutors help peers to succeed academically. They conduct tutoring sessions to clarify course content and provide study strategies. They are selected on the basis of academic skill, character, and the ability to communicate well with others.
Graduate Student Employment
There are a variety of options available for graduate students to find employment in Campus Residences. Students have the ability to work within a variety of roles (Assist with staff development and training, working with our residential tutoring center, supporting Resident Assistant staffs, etc.) within the department. All of these positions assist students with learning about the field of higher education and developing transferable skills for when they enter the workforce after graduate school.
Residential Education Assistant Coordinator Program:
This is a unique program for graduate students at Stony Brook University, that provides them the opportunity to develop and apply their experiences and knowledge from both inside and outside the classroom to the Residential Community. Furthermore, it will provide them with the opportunity to enhance their leadership skills, network, career development, and more. Position Description:
Graduate employment with the Department of Campus Residences provides a unique opportunity to assist in the development of student leaders outside of the classroom. The Residential Tutoring Centers & Academic Initiatives Assistant Coordinator works in support of students’ academic success, by overseeing the function of the Residential Tutoring Center (RTC). The RTC is a free, walk-in-based tutoring service accredited by the College Reading and Learning Association that offers tutoring for STEM introductory and prerequisite courses. Thus, the functioning of the RTC is an integral part of the department and the division of Student Affairs. This position directly supervises approximately 30 tutors and several office assistants. They are to maintain open communication with the Undergraduate Colleges concerning facility usage, participate in department and University functions, and work closely with the Academic Success and Tutoring Center department. This position has significant evening-hour responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
Supervision & Leadership Development
- Actively participate in weekly supervision meetings with direct supervisors, and various stakeholders.
- Assist in the tutor recruitment and selection process.
- Develop, train, and supervise tutors, lead tutors, and an office assistant (approximately 10-20 staff members).

Crisis Management Response
- Serves as an Administrator On Call to respond to crisis within the residential communities, during the evening/weekend(s) throughout the academic year.
- Serves as resource/referral agent for campus and community resources such as the Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Health Center, University Police, etc. Community Standards.
- Enforce student code of conduct and address possible violations of the Terms of Occupancy & Code of Student Responsibility.
- Educate residents regarding policies that exist at Stony Brook University and how to help them prevent issues in the future.
- Encourage colloquial discourse as a means to promote learning.
- Adjudicate low level conduct cases.
Department and Committee Responsibilities
- Serve as a part of the H-Community Area Team.
- Participate on a department committee and complete any assigned tasks.
- Participate in weekly area staff and bi-weekly department meetings.
- Participate in summer and/or winter training sessions and ongoing graduate/professional development.
- In the event that there is a RHD vacancy on campus, the AC will assist with oversight of the building and staff.
- Other duties as assigned.

Graduate employment with the Department of Campus Residences provides a unique opportunity for one to be able to assist in the development of students outside of the classroom. The Resident Assistant Development and Recruitment Assistant Coordinator serves the diverse residential population by assisting in the selection and training processes of the Resident Assistant program here at Stony Brook University. The Resident Assistant Development and Recruitment Assistant Coordinator works collaboratively with professional staff in the development of student staff (Resident Assistants), participates in department and University functions, and contributes to the creation of an on-campus living environment conducive to student success. Responsibilities:
Resident Assistant Development and Recruitment
- Serve on the Resident Assistant Development and Recruitment Committee.
- Attend and participate in bi-weekly committee meetings.
- Work collaboratively with full-time professional staff.
- Complete assigned duties as delegated by the committee chair and/or advisor.
- Attend weekly/bi-weekly 1:1 meetings with supervisor(s).
- Assist with on-going Resident Assistant Training (ex. Roundtables, RA Conference, etc.)
- Assist with management and auditing of brightspace, eRezlife, and other applicable online learning platforms associated with the resident assistant experience.
- Assist with developing and implementing various student staff training processes throughout the year. This involves helping to establish the training agenda in alignment with departmental initiatives and the training and development committee.
- Help identify and select training partners from campus and the community, providing them with the necessary information and materials for their training sessions.
- Assist as liaison to Residential Marketing.
Assessment
- Assist with reviewing KPIs (Key performance indicators) and compiling information into the semester and yearly reports.
- Review RA Training Feedback and present findings to the committee.
- Work collaboratively with the assessment representative and workgroup.

- Attend all mandatory department and RADAR-designated events.
- Other duties as assigned.
