Updates in University Honors Programs

05/10/2023

Dear Colleagues,

I’m writing to share a few recent developments in University Honors Programs at Stony Brook.

First, we are delighted to announce that the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program has joined the Division of Undergraduate Education. Alongside the Honors College and University Scholars, WISE is part of a new trio of “University Honors Programs” that will allow for an enhanced community of scholars, increased collaboration, and new synergies within and among the programs. All University Honors Programs are now located on the first floor of the Stony Brook Union in the Office of Academic Engagement suite.

In recognition of the growth and advancement of our Stony Brook Honors Programs and as part of a year-long targeted reorganization of the Division of Undergraduate Education, Dr. Catherine Sherman has joined SBU as the Assistant Dean for University Honors Programs to provide strategic leadership and oversight of WISE, University Scholars, and the Honors College. With over 20 years of experience in higher education, Dr. Sherman brings expertise in academic advising and administration, educational policy, and student services to the role and has taught and held leadership positions in colleges and universities in Pennsylvania and Ohio. She welcomes meeting and hearing from community members and may be reached at catherine.sherman@stonybrook.edu

As we look to the future of honors education at Stony Brook, faculty and staff continue to be critical partners. The Division wishes to thank the previous Faculty Directors of the three programs for their service and contributions – Dr. Monica Bugallo (WISE); Dr. Anne Moyer (Honors College); and Dr. Brian Colle (University Scholars) – who have all played an integral role in this transition. We will be developing new opportunities for faculty and staff to be involved in the coming year, in addition to the teaching and mentoring that has been so foundational to the programs.

Sincerely,

Rachelle Germana
Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
