Leave of Absence Guide for Undergraduate Students

Deciding to take a leave of absence can be a challenging decision, especially when you have been putting in significant effort toward your academic goals. The Leave of Absence Guide is designed to provide students who are considering a leave with the necessary guidance and clear steps on how you can best prepare for your leave, ideas to most effectively care for yourself while away, and how to transition back to your studies at Stony Brook University.

Semester Leave of Absence
(not medically related)

Students can submit a Semester Leave of Absence until 4pm on the last day of classes (May 9th, 2025).

This may be for personal reasons, including family issues, concerns with finances, employment requirements, or other circumstances interrupting your ability to proceed with academics. You need some time away from your studies to organize and focus on responsibilities external to your academic goals.

Medical Leave of Absence

Students can submit a Medical Leave of Absence until 4pm on the last day of classes (May 9th, 2025).

This type of leave is specific to an acute or ongoing medical situation that requires you to focus on your health and recovery. Examples may include mental health concerns or a flare-up of an ongoing medical condition.  You will need documentation from your healthcare provider. If unable to provide the medical documentation, you can take a traditional semester leave of absence to take time away from your courses to focus on obtaining the care necessary for your health and recovery.

Additional Academic ConsiderATIONS:

Leave selection cannot be changed - the type of request (Semester Leave of Absence or Medical Leave of Absence) cannot be changed after submission. Courses that were dropped from your schedule may not be added back.

Previous leaves/withdrawals on your record- if you have taken a leave of absence or withdrawn from the university previously, and submit another leave/withdrawal, you will need to wait one full semester before returning to the university. Example: if you are taking a leave of absence in fall, and have taken a leave of absence in a previous term, you will need to sit out in the upcoming spring semester, and can return in the subsequent fall term.

Cumulative GPA less than 2.0 - if you currently have a cumulative GPA lower than a 2.0, and submit a leave of absence or withdrawal, you will need to wait one full semester before returning to the university. Example: if you are taking a leave of absence in the fall, and have a cumulative GPA less than a 2.0, you will need to sit out for the upcoming spring, and can return in the subsequent fall term.
