Counseling and Health Broad-Based Fee

The Student Counseling and Health Services fee supports the health and wellness of our undergraduate and graduate students.  The fee provides funding for mental and medical health services, education, and preventative health care offered by licensed clinical professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, licensed mental health counselors, physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and health educators in Student Health Services (SHS), Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), and the Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO).

Eligibility

• What does the Counseling & Health fee that the students pay on their bill cover?

  The counseling and health fee covers all visits to providers at CAPS and SHS. This includes group and individual therapy, psychiatry services, outreach programs, and free (in limited quantities) over-the-counter medications. The fee also covers point-of-care testing, such as urine dipstick analysis, pregnancy tests, COVID antigen tests, rapid strep tests, and rapid flu tests, as well as phlebotomy for tests sent to external labs. We've arranged special pricing on titers for students who may need them for compliance or clinical/volunteer placements. Additionally, the fee supports the new telehealth service, Timely MD, which is available for medical and counseling visits during evenings and weekends.

• Do students have access to certain over the counter drugs?

  Students have access to various over-the-counter medications, including generic Tylenol, ibuprofen, cough syrup, throat lozenges, Claritin, Benadryl, antacids, and antidiarrheal medications. Pregnancy tests are also available for free. However, there may be a charge for more expensive over-the-counter medications, including the morning-after pill.

• Is there a cost to visit the offices aside from the copay/insurance cost?

  There is no additional cost to visit the offices. Insurance copays apply only at the pharmacy. The pharmacist will help explain any copay details at the time of service. For lab tests that are not analyzed at Student Health Services, a copay may be billed directly by the laboratory. Additionally, certain vaccines will incur a charge to your student account.

• If students visit your office during a time in which they do not have a bill (i.e. Summer) are they charged an additional fee?

  Yes. Students enrolled in the current academic semester (Fall, Winter, Spring, or Summer) are eligible to receive services during that semester without incurring any additional fees. During the summer or winter session,  students who were enrolled in the preceding semester (and have not graduated) and who are/or will be enrolled in the upcoming semester but are not enrolled in summer courses can still access CAPS and SHS but will be billed the summer session fee.
