Update on International Student Service Fee for Graduate Students
09/14/2023
This message was sent to supported graduate students at Stony Brook University who
receive a Graduate Tuition Scholarship.
Dear students,
I am writing with an update regarding the International Student Service Fee for students who receive Graduate Fee Scholarships. As you likely know, this fee provides essential support to international students to support high quality immigration advising and compliance, programming, and resources.
Specifically, F-1 and J-1 students who currently receive 100% Graduate Tuition Scholarships will have their International Student Service Fee fully covered as part of their fee scholarship. Students who are currently receiving less than a 100% Graduate Tuition Scholarship will have this fee covered in direct proportion to the level of their scholarship (e.g., those with a 50% scholarship will have 50% of the fee covered).
This change will take effect over the next few business days. All graduate students on an F-1 or J-1 visa who receive a Graduate Tuition Scholarship can check their “What Do I Owe” page via their SOLAR account for an updated account balance. If you already paid this fee, any resulting credit will be refunded by the Student Financial Services Office or applied toward other unpaid charges. If you believe this change applies to you and you have not seen any updates by the end of next week (Sept. 22), please reach out to finaid@stonybrook.edu.
I appreciate the advocacy of student leadership to raise awareness about the impact of this fee on international graduate students. You are an important and valued community at our university and we are committed to your success.
Sincerely,
Carl
