Postdoc registration for Alda Center communicating science courses is now open! Contact
me to enroll. Also, today is your last day to sign up for a chance to visit Regeneron Pharmaceuticals
in June. Sign up closes at 5pm today (yes, in an hour :) ).
1.Register now for Communicating Sciences courses for Fall 2018
Enrollment is now open for Postdocs interested in taking courses in communicating
science for Fall semester 2018. Through this special arrangement with the Alda Center, postdocs may sign up through the Postdoc
Office to take one course per semester for FREE. Space is limited, with two postdoc
spots in each section of most courses. Registration is first come, first served, and
they go quickly.
Postdocs new to the Alda Center should start with the core courses: JRN501: Distilling
Your Message, and JRN503: Improvisation for Scientists.
To Register: Email the Postdoc Office at postdocs@stonybrook.edu with your preferred course and
section. Placement is first come, first served. All registrants are expected to attend
and participate in every session.
2.Last Chance: Sign Up by 5pm Today for Chance to Visit Regeneron on June 22
Stony Brook has been invited to send a small group of advanced graduate students and
early-career postdocs to a one-day symposium at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals in Tarrytown,
NY. If you would like to learn more about bioscience industry research and careers,
you may sign up to be considered for one of 15 participant slots.
Regeneron’s Science to Medicine Forum is an opportunity for our trainees to learn more about industry science, careers
in biotech, and Regeneron’s postdoctoral program. The forum will take place on Friday,
June 22, 2018, from 8:00am – 5:00pm. The agenda will include: keynote lecture, hot
topics, mini-symposia grouped by theme, and tours. Attendees will also have the opportunity
to present a talk or poster on their research, space permitting.
Stony Brook can only send 15 trainees, and preference will be given to PhD students
who have advanced to candidacy and first-year postdocs who work in relevant fields.

WEBINAR AGENDA:
Strategies for Increasing Participation in PDA Leadership and Events
Participation in postdoctoral association (PDA) events and group governance can be
a challenge at many institutions. Building consistent postdoc engagement takes time
and strategy. This workshop identified challenges to postdoc involvement with the
institution’s PDA and discussed ways to address them. Representatives from the PDA
at Washington University in St. Louis will share best practices that they have found
to effectively increase postdoc involvement in PDA leadership and events.
Meeting the Challenge of Being an International Scholar in the U.S.
When it comes to career planning, international scholars have additional significant
challenges to consider: 1) cultural adjustment and establishing an efficient network
from scratch in the United States; 2) immigration status: knowing about the main avenues
that international scholars face in navigating visa and immigration obstacles; and
3) funding opportunities: grantsmanship is one of defining factors for scholars’ career
success, yet seems to be a limiting factor for internationals. Being able to identify
and navigate the available funding resources will facilitate a successful transition
to the next career chapter. This session provided practical ways to navigate these
challenges in pursuing successful careers.

1.Call for Applications: NIH Early Independent Award, On-Campus Deadline: June 4
The Office of the Vice President for Research invites applications to the NIH Director's Early Independence Award. This unique program supports exceptional investigators who wish to pursue independent
research essentially directly after completion of their terminal doctoral/research
degree or end of post-graduate clinical training, thereby forgoing the traditional
postdoctoral training period and accelerating their entry into an independent research
career. Applications are welcome from individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
and in any topic of relevance to the broad mission of NIH.
Each NIH Director's Early Independence Award is limited will be for up to $250,000
in direct costs per year, plus applicable Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs,
the maximum duration of each award is limited to five years, and Stony Brook University may submit 2 applications.
PI Eligibility:
PhD/terminal degree receipt between June 1, 2017 and September 30, 2019.
NOT have reached research independence (i.e., a postdoc, not faculty yet)
