The Postdoc Office is holding several big events for you in the next couple of weeks,
so I hope you'll find time to join us! In particular: our annual Resume Bootcamp on April 26th, and the next Practical Professional Skills on "Science of Stress Management" on April 25th.
Finally, some social events to come out and meet other postdocs: we'll be holding
a postdoc coffee on this Friday, April 20th for new postdocs and old, and another Postdoc Meet Up
at a place with a bar and food on Friday, Apr 27th. Drop by!
Resume Bootcamp: How to Create A Competitive Resume and CV
Learn strategies for dissecting job postings, framing your skills, and creating competitive resumes/CVs.
Thursday, April 26, 2018 10:00am—1:00pm Wang Center Room 201
This immersive workshop will focus on contemporary practices for: understanding "job
posting-jargon", framing your skills effectively, and learning other techniques used
in drafting competitive resumes/CVs. Hear from Randall Ribaudo who helps prepare students and postdocs for
career transitions.

Experts from Counseling and Psychological Services will help you learn to use intention,
present moment focus, and an understanding of your "thinking" brain to help you manage
stress.

3.New Postdoc Welcome and Postdoc Coffee on April 20th at 9am/10am
Join the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and your fellow postdocs for a Postdoc Coffee
to be held on Friday, April 20th. New postdocs are invited to an orientation starting
at 9am, followed by a coffee for all postdocs at 10am.
It's a chance to take a brief break from your research and meet postdocs outside your
group and department. Join us!

The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and the Center for Excellence in Learning
and Teaching (CELT) invite you to an Interactive Plenary session - Making the Choice
to Connect
Join us for this interactive session where you will be actively engaged in improvisation
exercises and practice clarity in speaking to non-scientists about your research.
The techniques introduced over the course of 90 minutes will help participants focus
on listening, relating, ordering information and defining meaningful goals to make
your message stick. These techniques will not only help you speak about your research,
but can also help you become a more effective teacher.
A group of postdocs from the Postdoc Advisory Committee will be meeting up nextFriday, April 27th at 5:30pm at the Hilton Garden Inn's bar,here on campus. Drop by at the end of your day and socialize! Bring along other folks
from your lab! Drinks and food will be available for purchase. Show up before 6pm
to take advantage of Happy Hour pricing.

1.Not too late to join the proposal mentoring program for NIH K99/R00
Are you still planning to apply for the NIH K99/R00 Pathways to Independence award
this June or October? The SBU Office of Proposal Development, in collaboration with
the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs and the Center for Inclusive Education, is offering
support for applicants. Even if you missed our Feb 13th grantwriting workshop, you can still join the mentoring program and receive feedback on your proposal from
our experienced faculty mentors.

2.Call for Applications: NIH Early Independent Award, On-Campus Deadline: June 4
The Office of the Vice President for Research invites applications to the NIH Director's Early Independence Award. This unique program supports exceptional investigators who wish to pursue independent
research essentially directly after completion of their terminal doctoral/research
degree or end of post-graduate clinical training, thereby forgoing the traditional
postdoctoral training period and accelerating their entry into an independent research
career. Applications are welcome from individuals of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
and in any topic of relevance to the broad mission of NIH.
Each NIH Director's Early Independence Award is limited will be for up to $250,000
in direct costs per year, plus applicable Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs,
the maximum duration of each award is limited to five years, and Stony Brook University may submit 2 applications.
PI Eligibility:
PhD/terminal degree receipt between June 1, 2017 and September 30, 2019.
NOT have reached research independence (i.e., a postdoc, not faculty yet)
