September 6th 2016: 7:00 am - Forecast Update

The following is the latest forecast update:
  • North to northeast winds continue to increase from east to west across Southeast CT and the Twin Forks of Long Island as outer rain bands move west toward this area
  • Minor to locally Moderate tidal flooding is forecast across Suffolk County through today with tidal departures around ½ to 2 ½ feet above normal.

Current Warnings and Advisories

  •  Tropical Storm Warning for 30 to 40 mph winds with gusts to 50 mph from New Haven County east and Suffolk County, NY and for all local coastal waters except NY Harbor.
  • Coastal Flood Advisory for Atlantic facing South Shore Bays for today’s High Tide Cycle

September 5th 2016: 7:00 am - Forecast Update

We continue to monitor Hermine as it makes its way north and east of Long Island.  Here is what to expect:

  • There is a chance of rain later this morning and into early evening.
  • Suffolk County remains under a Tropical Storm Warning, however the warnings for areas of New Jersey, New York City and Nassau County were canceled last night as the overall intensity was much less than predicted.
  • Moderate wind speeds in the 20-30 mph range are expected during the day today along with some tidal surge during the high tide cycles

September 4th 2016: 7:00 pm - Forecast Update

The following is the latest update from the National Weather Service:
  • A farther southeast storm track resulting in lower surge forecasts.
  • If Hermine continues its eastward track, the surge will be even lower.
  • Potential for Minor Tidal Flooding Tonight and Widespread Moderate to locally Major Tidal flooding during times of high tide on Monday across Long Island.
Reasonable worst case scenarios if max surge coincides with time of high tide include:
  • Widespread Moderate Coastal Flooding of 1 to 3 feet of inundation above ground level for Long Island’s Coastal communities during Monday.
  • Isolated Moderate Flooding possible along the Atlantic Ocean south shore bays in Brooklyn and Queens during high tides on Monday.
  • Battering High Surf (8-12 ft) causing Significant Dune Erosion and Localized Overwashes Monday through Tuesday.
  • Of particular concern is potentially life threatening enhancement of surge flooding by wave action across dune compromised oceanfront communities from Fire Island to Long Beach westward to the Rockaways.
  • Life Threatening Rip Currents associated throughout the duration of this event.
Maximum Winds spreading southeast to northwest Monday morning
  • 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 50 mph Long Island and Southeast CT

  • 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph Inland
  • Highest Winds along the coast, bridges and tall buildings developing Monday morning and continuing through Monday Night
Heavy Rain and Freshwater Flooding threat is low. Rainfall of less than 1 inch is forecasted.

September 4th 2016: 12:00 pm - Forecast Update

Hermine is presently about 275 miles of south of Montauk point continuing its move north/northeast at about 12mph. The following watches and warnings remain:

  • Our area remains under a Tropical Storm Warning
  • Chance for significant rain is greatly reduced and remains low.
  • Winds currently are predicted to continue to increase in a northeast direction 20-30 kts with gusts reaching 50 mph later tonight through Monday during the day.
  • Greatest tidal storm surge areas include Riverhead in eastern Long Island, Freeport and Long Beach in Nassau County and Kings Point/New Haven Ct vicinities.

If the system tracks further east, storm surge and winds would be expected to be less.
If the system tracks further north, tidal surge, particularly around high tide times, and winds are both expected to be higher.
Tonight's high tide we can expect a 1-2' above normal tidal surge.

We will continue to provide further updates throughout this event.

September 3rd 2016: 1:30 pm - Forecast Update

The following is the latest forecast update from the National Weather Service. We will continue to closely monitor and provide further updates.

Moderate to High Confidence for Coastal Flooding Sunday through Tuesday – for Widespread “Moderate” to “Major” tidal flooding starting Sunday

Highest surges expected during Sunday Night’s High Tides
Reasonable worst case scenario of 2 to 4 feet of inundation Above Ground Level for shores under the Prototype Storm Surge Watch.  New York Harbor, Staten Island’s eastern shores, Long Island’s South Shore Back Bays and Peconic Bay, and areas along Western Long Island Sound are most vulnerable.

High Confidence for Tropical Depression Storm Winds of 39-57 mph 8 am Sunday - 8 am Tuesday - Most vulnerable areas along the coast, at bridges and taller buildings.

Low to Moderate Confidence for Heavy Rain potential Sunday night through Monday:  0.5 to 1.5 inches west to east. Freshwater flooding threat is low.

September 2, 2016: 9:30 AM - Hurricane Hermine

The University Police - Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring several forecasts for this weekend's weather.
Hurricane Hermine made landfall in Florida early this morning and shortly thereafter weakened to Tropical Storm speed and strength as it began to turn north towards Georgia.
The following is the latest forecast for our area:
  • High Risk for rip currents and beach erosion throughout the weekend and into Monday (Please use caution if you are bound for the beach!)
  • Moderate to major coastal flooding is possible
  • Heavy rains and strong winds are also possible depending on the ultimate track of the storm as it nears Long Island
In anticipation, please consider the following as they relate to your individual buildings and areas:
  • Check construction areas for loose debris, attached building materials that may need to be secured, and lay down areas with items that can be carried by winds
  • Verify that open areas of excavation are properly marked and secured
  • Please check windows, doors and other building openings that may be prone to leaking or require manual locking/closing
