Helping ELL's Learn English Vocabulary in the General Classroom
Participants in this course will learn the following information, skills, and strategies:
- How do words get learned and stay learned, both for ELLs and for native speakers of English?
- What are the principles of second language acquisition, and how can teachers infuse these principles into their daily teaching routines?
- What specific academic words must students learn as possible for success in school? What are the best ways to teach these words in a classroom that includes both ELLs and native speakers of English?
- What are engaging, sociable, low-stress ways to introduce, reinforce, and review academic words/phrases?
- The majority of ELLs here on Long Island speak Spanish as their native language. What can non-Spanish-speaking teachers do to help our Spanish speakers make the transition from Spanish to English?
