New Program Offers Essential Skills for School Leaders
Launching Summer 2023
Stony Brook University's new professional development course for school leaders examines
all aspects of public-school human resource management, providing participants with
the foundational skills needed to build strong HRM systems that enhance performance,
create a positive work culture, increase instructional capacity and have a strong
impact on student learning.
Taught by subject matter experts in the fields of HR, labor relations, performance
management, talent acquisition, leadership development and workplace culture, the
course uses a variety of instructional approaches that anchor concepts. In each module,
participants will learn action-oriented strategies that relate directly to personal
and professional development.
Participants who successfully complete the course will earn 30 CTLE hours.
Modules
Description
Module 1 covers three units: Course Introduction, Employment Law and Policies and Procedures Specific to Schools, and Labor Relations.

Learning Objectives
Understand the evolution of the school HR practitioner’s current role to position
program participants for future success.
Analyze the four C’s of HR leadership.
Create your HR vision (the journey from practitioner to leader)
Enhance participant insight and comprehension of established and emerging legal trends
that impact the workplace.
Develop an employer-employee relationship that aligns with the organizational mission.
Provide participants with insights to the collective bargaining process (public and
private sector) conflict-dispute resolution strategies, just cause and the disciplinary
process.

Analyze of the “future ready” workplace. How to develop a plan and receive internal
support at all levels.
Formulate a personal and professional growth plan to focus on becoming internal consultants,
adapting, and improving organizational practices and policies.
Become a highly visible, trusted, and impactful HR leader.
Learn from a panel of impactful HR practitioners to gain insight into best practices
and career guidance.
Network with school leaders.
