Student Employees Awarded $2,500 in Scholarship Funds From FSA
STONY BROOK, NY, February 11, 2016 - Hard work does pay off. The Faculty Student Association (FSA) at Stony Brook University established a $2,500 scholarship fund that recognizes outstanding student employees who excel in the workplace and have gained transferable skills for their future careers. The first of its kind, this FSA scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership abilities, exceptional service to their peers and great work ethic.
Five student employees were selected as recipients, each receiving $500. Each student
was evaluated on their achievements in the workplace, how they explained how the skills
they learned would be transferrable to a future career and their plans for after they
graduate.
Recipients include:
- Terrence Martin ’15, Business Management major
- Alaina Ingram ’16, Social Work major
- Shannon Sunny ’16, Sociology major
- Christofer Paolillo ’17, Mechanical Engineering major
- Emily Conyers ’18, Sociology major
“Congratulations to the scholarship recipients for being recognized for their hard
work and dedication, and for their commitment to helping FSA achieve its ongoing mission
to enhance campus life for students,” said Dawn Villacci, FSA’s Assistant Director
of Marketing.
The scholarship idea originated from a group of FSA student employees who worked as
interns during summer 2015. These students were charged with developing ways to increase
student employee retention. To do so, the interns reviewed previous FSA employee satisfaction
surveys, conducted in-depth interviews with current student employees to learn about
their workplace concerns and distributed a new survey to student employees. The survey
revealed that most students would like to be recognized for their achievements through
financial assistance.

“Each experience allowed me to hone in on important skills – such as time management,
teamwork and the ability to be proactive and creative,” said Sunny. “FSA cares about
its student employees. All of us scholarship recipients are proof of that.”
Sunny also noted that FSA helps to develop and grow their student employees’ abilities
by offering internship panels and mentors them to help them in their future careers.
Conyers said she was happy to be rewarded for putting in the hard work. “Working for
FSA was more than worth it and I would recommend other students to pursue FSA opportunities
in the future,” she said.
How to Apply
The scholarships occur every semester and are exclusive to FSA and Campus Dining student
employees. Scholarship applicants are evaluated on their achievements in the workplace,
how they explain how the skills they learn are transferrable to a future career and
their plans for after they graduate.
To qualify, students must be currently working within FSA for a minimum of two semesters
while working at least 10 hours a week during each semester, must demonstrate professionalism
and positivity and must be a diligent worker and team player in the workplace. A written
personal statement and a recommendation letter from their manager is also required.
