Cupcake War, A New Culinary Competition Inspires Stony Brook Students’ Creativity
Stony Brook, NY, November 21, 2012 – Cupcake fans unite as they watch students show off their decorating skills at Campus
Dining’s first Cupcake War event. On Tuesday, November 27th, four teams of students
will vie for the title of Cupcake War champions in the The competitors will receive everything they need to create the perfect cupcake display including different sizes and flavors of cupcakes, icing bags, tips for decorating and all the baking ingredients necessary. A mentor chef from Campus Dining Services will be paired with each team to provide advice but not take part in creating specialty frosting or decorating the cupcakes.
The Iron Chef-style competition is based off of the popular Food Network show, where four pastry chefs compete to see who can bake the best looking and best tasting cupcakes. Student teams interested in competing registered online at stonybrook.edu/dining from November 7th through November 12th. The four teams each made up of four students were selected through online voting from November 13th through 16th. Campus Dining received almost 5,000 votes from the campus community for the selection of the four competing teams.
The final four teams- Wolfie’s Angels, Soyers, Cupcake Mafia and Delicious Divas were announced on November 19th giving the competitors one week to plan their best cupcake designs before they face off for the title of Cupcake War Champions.
“Students at Stony Brook love the show Cupcake Wars so much that we wanted them to be able to have their own competition,” said Carly Shepherd, the Marketing Director of Campus Dining Services and Moderator for this event. “We think this should be a really fun way for students to show off their decorating skills in front of their friends and win some great prizes.”
The judges, including Joshua Voyles, Residence Hall Director, Jackie Catania, Campus Dining Services Baking Manager and John Hutchinson, Campus Dining Services Executive Chef will taste and evaluate each entry according to the flavor of the frosting, appearance of the display and the originality of the design within the theme of the event. Members of the audience will be given a collective vote and may judge each team based on the appearance and originality of the cupcake they prepared. The students on the winning team will each receive a $50 Starbucks gift card and a basket of baking goodies.
“We’re looking to pull out all the stops for this competition to give the teams a real challenge,” said John Hutchinson, the Executive Chef for Campus Dining Services. “You can expect to see some really creative designs once students are given this year’s theme.”
