SUNY Research Foundation or Stony Brook Foundation?
Frequently, faculty and staff throughout the University ask for clarification regarding which foundation (Research Foundation of SUNY or the Stony Brook Foundation) should be used for a grant application submitted to a non-governmental granting source. The following guidelines will apply in most cases:

Charitable contributions in the form of individual gifts, corporate gifts, corporate grants and private foundation grants that do not involve human or animal subjects, biosafety issues, export controls, DNA or radioactive materials.

Charitable contributions with the following stipulations will be further reviewed to determine the best entity for administration:
- unspent money must be returned to funder,
- detailed reports must be submitted at the end of the funding term,
- an end date for the use of funds is specified, and/or
- prior approval is required for any deviation from the original budget.
