Application Guidelines

• Deadlines

  Workshop Applications: 

  Workshop Scholarship Deadline: March 30

  Final Advanced Workshop Deadline: April 15

  Children's Literature Deadline: May 15

  Lecture Series: July 1

  Emerging Writer Workshop: July 1

  Early application is encouraged, as workshop space is limited. Notification of acceptance will begin after April 15. After that date, acceptances will ordinarily be emailed within three weeks.

  Scholarship applications received after March 15th will be considered on a rolling basis if space and funds are available.

• Writers Conference
  • Applications are done through our online form. Please make sure you have all your documents collected and ready for uploading before you begin to make the process as easy as possible. Please include your last name in your file name (ex: LastNamesubmission.doc or LastNamepersonalstatment.pdf).

  • Acceptance to a workshop is based primarily on the promise of your writing sample. 
  • Secondary consideration is also given to an indication of how you will benefit from the experience of joining us.
  • Please submit  10 pages of poetry, single-spaced,  or  10-20 pages of prose, double-spaced, in the genre to which you’re applying. The sample should be in 12-point font with your name on each page. Writing samples can be uploaded as PDFs or Word docs. For Children's Literature, visit their guidelines page below.
• Children's Literature Conf.
   

  • Acceptance to a workshop is based primarily on the promise of your writing sample, as follows:

  • Picture Book applicants should upload a sample or draft picture book manuscript, up to 1000 words, double-spaced, in 12-point font, with your name and page numbers on every page. (PDF or Word)
  • Illustrators should submit 3-5 sample illustrations. (in PDF or jpg)
  • All others should upload 10-20 pages of prose, double-spaced, in the genre to which you’re applying. The sample should be in 12-point font with your name and page numbers on every page. (PDF or Word)

  • If you are applying to two different genres please include separate writing samples for each genre.

  • Secondary consideration is given to an indication of how you will benefit from the experience of joining us. Please provide a statement of purpose describing what you hope to accomplish in the workshop and what motivates you to apply.

  • Partial scholarships are available. To apply for a scholarship, please include a personal statement and a letter of recommendation attesting to the strength of your work along with the other materials. Members of the MFA program who enroll in both sessions may be eligible to apply for financial aid. Visit the SBU financial aid office for more information.
• Scholarships

  General Scholarships - partial scholarships available to those taking a workshop. Only Children's Literature Conf. needs a Letter of Recommendation. Please include a personal statement - 300 words max.  (deadline March 15)

  First Gen - a full scholarship for a five day workshop for an applicant who is a first generation college graduate or attendee.Please include a personal statement - 300 words max. (deadline March 15)

  Local Voices - a full scholarship as a commuter in a 5-day workshop for a year-round resident of the East End of Long Island (Riverhead-MTK/Orient). Please include a personal statement - 300 words max.  (deadline March 15)

  Shinnecock Indian Nation -  a full scholarship in a 5-day workshop for a member of the Shinnecock Indian Nation. Please include a personal statement - 300 words max. (deadline March 15)

   

  If applying for funding, your personal statement should be 300 words or less.

  If applying for Children's Lit Conference funding and require a letter of rec, please arrange for a recommender to send a letter attesting to the strength of your work and your level of commitment. 

  Funding is only available for non-credit participants.
