First Generation Abroad

As the first person in your family to be attending college, you already have accomplished something remarkable. Embarking on a study abroad experience will elevate your academic achievements, but not without challenge. As you prepare for an experience abroad, you may encounter pushback or questions from your family. Though this may seem like a novel idea to them, your participation in a program overseas will advance your academic abilities, personal development and preparations for your career or even graduate studies.

As we work with many first generation students, we are mindful of what the program selection and application process could be like for you. Though it may feel daunting, our program coordinators serve to support and guide you through each step from finding the best program fit to funding your program. As a first generation student, you have an incredible opportunity to inspire the next generation to do something even bigger than attending college by learning something new overseas during an unforgettable study abroad experience.

Things to Consider

Do I know anyone in my family or friend circle who has studied abroad? What should I ask them to better prepare for my experience?

Have I spoken with my academic and financial aid advisors to determine the best route in participating in a study abroad program?

What does learning something new overseas mean to me? And my family?

How will my family react when I tell them about my plan to study abroad? How can I communicate the value of education abroad to my family? Will I have support?
