MISSING STUDENT
It may be difficult to distinguish between a student who simply is not following attendance guidelines for class/work and those who are truly missing. When you are concerned about a student’s whereabouts and have not been able to get in touch with them, we prefer that you share your concerns as soon as possible.
Signs:
- Absent under circumstances indicating unaccountable or involuntary disappearance
- Absence from class, work or other obligations for a period of time without any prior notification
- Peer, friends, family reports them as missing
What to do:
- When you feel/know that a student is missing call UPD
- Keep in mind, the most effective reports include information about the student(s), their last contact or how long you’ve noticed the absence
- Don’t wait for another person to do so, several people can report the same person missing
- If you still feel uncertain about your concerns, you may also consult with Student Support Team before calling UPD
Important to remember:
- University Police Department is the main point of contact when you are worried about a missing student
- You can call DOS or UCS for preliminary support but the final investigation will be conducted by UPD
- When reporting a missing student, early reporting is better than trying to investigate their absence yourself
- As a proactive action, encourage your students to update their emergency contact information in SOLAR
