Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

What is an STI?

A sexually transmitted infection (STI) is caused by an organism that can be passed from one person to another during sex or through intimate contact. Some people use the term STI or STD (sexually transmitted disease)  interchangable. The term STI is broader and more encompassing because some infections are curable and may not cause any symptoms.

How does someone get an STI?

STIs are typically passed between sexual partners through unprotected sex (oral, vaginal or anal). Some are transmitted through skin-to-skin contact. Using condoms or other barriers during sex reduces your chances of transmitting many STIs.

How do I know if I have an STI?

You can get tested for an STI at Student Health Services.
