Have you noticed a student struggling—whether academically, emotionally, or personally—and aren’t sure how to help? You are not alone. Stony Brook University offers multiple resources to support both students and the faculty and staff members who care about them.
Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)

The Red Book: A Guide to Student Support
Stony Brook’s Red Book is a comprehensive resource for managing a variety of student-related concerns, including:
- Active shooter situations
- Alcohol and drug use
- Disruptive behavior
- Emotional distress
- Food and housing insecurity
- Challenging classroom scenarios
- Medical emergencies
- Missing students
- Sexual violence
- Student deaths
- Suicide crises
Student Support Team
The Student Support Team is a group of individuals committed to supporting the emotional, physical, and intellectual wellness of all Stony Brook University students. If a student is not sure how or where to get help or is facing a challenge that is impacting their academics, the Support Team will provide proactive and supportive consultation and refer students to other on-campus resources, as needed.

CARE Team (Campus Assessment, Response, and Evaluation)
The CARE Team supports the safety and well-being of the campus community by identifying and responding to students in acute distress.
If you’re concerned about a student—whether the issue is academic, behavioral, or safety-related—please submit a report to the CARE Team. The CARE team will evaluate the situation and provide appropriate intervention and support.

CAPS regularly partners with departments to provide tailored training sessions on topics such as:
- Recognizing and responding to students in distress
- Navigating campus mental health resources
