Admissions Criteria

To be eligible for the Simons STEM Scholars program you must be a high school senior or academically equivalent and entering your freshman year of college on the traditional timeline (ie; not transferring from Stony Brook or another institution into the program).

While there is no minimum GPA requirement to be considered for the Simons STEM Scholars Program, the average GPA is a 95/100 or higher.  There is no SAT or ACT requirement for the program, but the average of selected scholars is a 1400 on the SAT or a 30-31 on the ACT.

Applicants must be addmitted into their major of choice to be considered for honors programs at Stony Brook University. Some majors are more competitive than others at Stony Brook University and applicants should keep this in mind during their application process.

Applicants must demonstrate a Pre-Calculus or a math-equivalent proficiency by the time of matriculation.

Applicants must have a personal commitment to increasing diversity and inclusion in the STEM fields.

Applicants must have a strong interest in research and a research based career.

Applicants are preferred to have demonstrated leadership and community service experiences. (If it is present on your Stony Brook Application we will see it there!)

Applicants must either be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident. Applicants who are not US citizens may apply, however students who intend to study on a F1 visa are not eligible.  If you have additional questions regarding this stipulation, please contact us at SimonsScholars@stonybrook.edu.
