Professional interests: 

Recent work has focused on equity in pre-college and university physical science, quantum, and engineering education; reformed teaching practices in precollege and undergraduate science; sociocognitive influences on STEM access and participation; STEM curricular integration; urban science teacher recruitment and retention.

Grants and Initiatives: 

Dr. Kelly has served as Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on grants from the National Science Foundation, National Grid, PSE&G, PhysTEC, the Stony Brook Parents’ Fund for Excellence, New York Campus Compact, the SUNY/New York Academy of Sciences STEM Mentoring Initiative, and the SUNY Innovative Instructional Technology Program. She has been awarded more than $10.3 Million in external funding as PI or Co-PI. 

Awards and Service: 

Dr. Kelly's major awards include the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2016), the Outstanding Teacher Award (2006) from Teachers College, Columbia University, the Provost’s Faculty Recognition Award for Excellence in Scholarship & Research (2010) from Lehman College, CUNY, the Denise D. Denton Best Paper Award (2019) and the Best Diversity Paper Award (2018) from the American Society for Engineering Education. She serves as Associate Editor of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (2020-25), and she served on the Editorial Board of Journal of Science Teacher Education (2019-22). She has also acted in an advisory capacity for several projects, including the American Institute of Physics Diversity Task Force, the PhysTEC STEP UP Program, and APLU’s Science and Mathematics Teacher Imperative. Dr. Kelly has advised 19 Ph.D. graduates of the Program in Science and STEM Education at Stony Brook.   

Collaborations: 

Dr. Kelly collaborates with faculty from the Department of Physics & Astronomy, the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics, and the College of Engineering & Applied Sciences. She has also designed and taught physics, quantum information science & technology, chemistry, and engineering outreach programs for urban secondary students and teachers through the Bronx Institute, the New York Hall of Science, and the American Museum of Natural History.
