Managing Interns
Working with interns in a remote setting can be a new process for many. Building a clear communication plan and structure will be the key to your success.
Communication
Communication check ins with staff should be pre-scheduled and more often than in a F2F experience. Review the Effective & Responsible Communication Guidelines to get started. Zoom and other video conferencing tools can be very useful in communicating with interns.
Assignments
Make thoughtful judgments about what can be done remotely v F2F; and once we return to hybrid take the best of F2F and the best of remote for your site.
Technology
Speak with your interns about technology tools they have access to and what they need assistance with.
Productivity
Consider how you will gauge productivity of your team if you cannot see them and observe their work. Their are many tools available to help you manage productivity and projects including:
The Future of Work
According to the LinkedIn course, Managing Virtual Teams, hiring managers expect half the work force to be remote in the next decade.
Team Building
Focus on creating remote community activities to develop a close team and increase engagement. Engaging students through Virtual Meetings is a great way to start to build community as well.
Virtual Show and Tell
Each student can show something that is important to them with a brief story e.g. a picture, an award, a pet, a trinket, a piece of jewelry.
Virtual Scavanger Hunt
This can be done in teams to learn more about your organization (e.g. finding things on your website or your company handbook) or individually by having students find things around their space that they can share to get to know one another better.
