Provost's Budget Updates, Summer 2023
07/31/2023
Dear Colleagues,
I’m writing to share updates regarding the Strategic Hiring Plan approved for the most recent cycle for areas that report to the Provost. The Provost’s Office is currently in the process of sharing information on the Authorization to Recruit (ATR) approvals with deans, vice provosts, and other leaders of West Campus units that report to the Provost. I also want to invite all of you to take part again in a public forum that will provide an overview of this year’s approvals.
Summaries of approved hiring decisions have been shared with deans and vice provosts, who are now providing these updates to leaders of units that report to them. Once all units have been notified of their approvals, we will post a summary to the Provost’s Office website (anticipated by the end of this week).
At our second annual Provost’s Budget Forum, I will share an overview of all hires approved and more details on the strategy behind our hiring decisions. This event is open to all faculty and staff, although the session will focus solely on hiring activity and planning for schools, colleges, and units that report through the Provost’s Office.

Overall, we have made progress, although financial constraints still exist. We are benefitting from increased support from the Governor’s Office and SUNY, who recognize the value that Stony Brook contributes to the state as a flagship. Thanks to these enhancements to our budget, we were able to build upon the work we started last year in stabilizing hiring in critical faculty and staff roles. Our work is not finished; however, I see us making great progress.
I gained valuable feedback from those of you who attended the budget forum last year, and I look forward to seeing many of you again.
Sincerely,
Carl
