Maintaining a Safe and Respectful Campus Environment
February 3, 2025
Dear Stony Brook Faculty and Staff,
As we begin the spring semester, it is important to reaffirm our shared commitment to fostering a respectful and inclusive campus environment. While debates over controversial global and national issues will continue — as they should at an institution like ours — I urge everyone to remain true to our core values of decency, mutual respect and the importance of civil dialogue free of discrimination.
I encourage all of you to familiarize yourself with the Stony Brook University Guide for Campus Events and Demonstrations, a comprehensive resource that outlines the university’s policies for hosting events, engaging in demonstrations, and the expectations for respectful discourse. Because it provides clarity on what is permitted and the consequences of violating these guidelines, this document should be a valuable tool for all members of our Stony Brook community. The university will enforce the rules consistently and will do so in a way that is viewpoint and content-neutral.
Please join me in upholding our culture of respect, civility, and understanding to
ensure that Stony Brook remains a welcoming and supportive place for everyone. Thank
you for your dedication to these principles and for all you do for Stony Brook.
Sincerely,
Richard L. McCormick
Interim President
