Ryan Kawalerski
Former Council Chair
Ryan Kawalerski (’19) was a junior, currently pursuing majors in Biochemistry and Applied Math and Statistics as a part of the Honors College. Originally from Buffalo, NY, Ryan found a home at Stony Brook where he was a member of the President’s Council of Student Advisors, a Student Ambassador, Honors College Big Sibling, Teaching Assistant, and Secretary of the Synthetic Biology Society. When not taking classes, Ryan enjoyed performing science research and worked as a member of the Dr. Adan Aguirre Lab in Developmental Neurology/Pharmacology and the Dr. Eckard Wimmer Lab in Virology. He worked as a clinical assistant in the Department of Neurology in the Stony Brook University Medical School under Dr. Patricia Coyle.
Tyler Francisco
Former Vice Chair
Tyler Francisco (‘19) was a junior from East Setauket, NY majoring in Psychology on the Pre-Med track. After two very insightful years at Stony Brook University, he looked to serve the community that has helped him become the successful student he is today. He did this by actively involving himself as an Orientation Leader, a Commuter Assistant, University Scholar, member of Project Sunshine, while also conducting research in the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology. In his free time, he enjoyed staying active by running and playing basketball or badminton.
Annet Kuruvilla
Former Cohort Secretary
Annet Kuruvilla (‘19) was a junior from East Meadow, NY. She majored in Biochemistry and part of the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program and the Scholars for Medicine (B.S./M.D.) program. Annet was involved in a variety of clubs and initiatives on and off campus that demonstrates her passion for the Stony Brook community. She was a performer for Taandava, Stony Brook's Indian classical dance team and a Student Ambassador for the Dean of Students. In addition, Annet worked as a WISE mentor for matriculating freshmen and conducts research in the Dermatology and Pathology lab of Dr. Jiang Chen. She also completed a Clinical Oncology Internship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center under the guidance of two oncology physicians.
Timothy Samuel
Former Data Collection Chair
Timothy Samuel (‘18) was a senior majoring in biochemistry/minoring in music theory on the Pre-Medical Track, a commuter, as well as a transfer student, hailing from the suburbs of Farmingville, NY. Some of his on-campus involvement were President for CSTEP-Club, as well as working as a standardized patient in Stony Brook Hospital. Timothy also conducted an independent research project in Madagascar during the summer study abroad program and plans to continue Madagascar-oriented work in the coming future.
Jessica McKay
Former Data Analysis Lead
Jessica McKay ('18) was a senior from Blooming Grove, NY majoring in Social Welfare with a minor in Leadership Development. Jessica served as a Resident Assistant in the College of Leadership and Service, Senator for the Undergraduate Student Government, Student Ambassador for the Dean of Students Office, Co-President of I Am That Girl and a Red Watch Band CARE Team Member, among other roles. In the Summer of 2017, Jessica served in the inaugural cohort of Accelerate Fellows at Teach For America.
Sahil Rawal
Former Report Committee Chair
Sahil Rawal (‘19) was a junior from Herricks, NY, majoring in Biology in the Scholars for Medicine (B.S./M.D.) program in conjunction with Stony Brook Medical School. Sahil served as the Editor-in-Chief of Stony Brook Young Investigators Review, the only undergraduate science research journal on campus. Sahil also was a Teaching Assistant for BIO 204, and a Big Sibling for the Honors College.
Tina Zheng
Tina Zheng (‘19) was a junior from Queens, NY, majoring in Computer Science and Economics. She was an ITS undergraduate college fellow and a TA for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) students. She worked as a social media intern under the Information and Technology Studies (ITS) undergraduate college, and stayed involved in the ITS undergraduate college.
Jessica Jin
Jessica (‘18) was a junior studying Applied Mathematics and Statistics in the Honors College at Stony Brook University. She was raised in Shanghai, China and came to the U.S at the age of 16 as an exchange student. She assisted in developing the IBM Watson for Patient Safety project as the Safety Operations Summer Intern at Celgene, one of the fastest-growing pharma companies in the Fortune 500. Previously, she had worked as an international student ambassador and student library assistant to provide students with appropriate resources and help improve their life experience at Stony Brook University.
Zachary Shaps
Zachary Shaps (‘19) was a junior from Bandera, TX majoring in Biology, minoring in Political Science following the Pre-Med track. On campus, Zachary was elected senator for the Undergraduate Student Government and was later elected President of the Senate for the 2016-2017 academic year. Dedicated to student engagement, Zachary also served as a Resident Assistant in Hamilton College in Kelly Quad and a Hillel Peer Network Engagement Intern. As a volunteer in the chaplaincy department at Stony Brook Hospital, he loved to help patients empower themselves. During his time as an SBU student, Zachary was a dedicated student advocate, working on initiatives such as free menstrual hygiene products, budget accessibility for USG clubs, and free laundry.
Sohaib Norman-Abufarha
Sohaib Norman-Abufarha (’19) was a junior from Brooklyn, NY majoring in Respiratory Care. As an affable student leader on campus, Sohaib was dedicated to improving the Stony Brook Community and bringing out the best of the student body. Sohaib wanted all SBU students to go “Far Beyond” and believed that is possible only through many interactions outside the classroom, as well as excelling in your individual studies.
Nicole Miller
Nicole Miller (‘20) was a sophomore Honors College student studying Human Evolutionary Biology on a pre-medical track. She was from Selkirk, NY and attended the University at Albany and Sage University in 2015 through a dual high school/university program. Nicole participated in the Alternative Spring Break Outreach club at Stony Brook, as well as a biology TA.
Kashan Rizvi
Kashan Rizvi (‘19) was a junior from Hewlett, NY. He was studying business management while on the Pre-med path and eventually wants to start his own private medical practice. Kashan also conducts research in the neurology department under Dr. Anat Biegon, where he looked at brain responses to traumatic and inflammatory events. In his free time, Kashan enjoyed volunteering at medical practices and spending time with his friends and family.
