Mission & Vision
Fighting food insecurity on campus.
Food insecurity is the inability to access enough food for you to live an active, healthy, and productive life. Not only does it mean not having access to sufficient food overall, it can also mean:
- not having access to sufficient healthy food options
- not having access to culturally relevant food
- having only inconsistent or otherwise difficult to access food.
Food insecurity is a public health concern affecting people of all ages throughout the United States. Those at risk of experiencing food insecurity are more likely to have chronic diseases such as diabetes, asthma, and even cancer, leading to poor overall health outcomes. College students in particular are more at risk than the general population for experiencing food insecurity due to increased tuition costs, a decrease in funding programs, and a lack of available part-time jobs.
In order to combat food insecurity at Stony Brook University, the Seawolves Pantry opened its doors in September 2013 as a joint project between the Division of Campus Residences and the School of Health Technology and Management, with collaboration and support from:
Community Service Club, Commuter Student Association, Faculty Student Association, Graduate Student Organization, Health and Nutrition Club, National Residence Hall Honorary, Non-Traditional Students/Adult Learners Association, Residence Hall Association, Student Health Service, Undergraduate Student Government
The pantry is currently a part of the Center for Civic Justice operating under the Department of Student Community Development. The Seawolves Pantry has successfully served thousands of students and continues to provide healthy food options for those who need them.
Mission
The Seawolves Pantry endeavors to provide for university community members who are currently experiencing or are at risk of food insecurity. We are committed to being a stable and reliable supplemental food source while providing additional resources to overcome food insecurity. We strive to stock our shelves with healthy and nutritious food options to better nourish our community and address potential nutritional gaps.
Vision
The Seawolves Pantry aims to see an empowered campus community where everyone has equitable access to healthy food and other basic needs in order for everyone to succeed in all aspects of life.
