Prospective Students

What is EOP?

EOP is the abbreviation for the Arthur O. Eve Educational Opportunity Program of the State University of New York. The Educational Opportunity Program was created by the New York State Legislature "to provide access, academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for succeeding in college but who may not have otherwise been offered admission."

Only students who have demonstrated the potential to graduate are admitted to Stony Brook through EOP.

What is AIM?

AIM is the acronym for the Advancement on Individual Merit program of the University at Stony Brook. AIM is the campus name for EOP. In order to reduce confusion and to maintain tradition, the Educational Opportunity Program at Stony Brook is referred to as the EOP/AIM.

EOP/AIM Support Services include:

  • Summer Academy for Pre-Freshman
  • Personal Counseling and Academic Advising
  • Mentorship Program
  • CBIT (Computer Based Instruction and Tutorial) Lab
  • Workshops and Conferences
  • Free Tutoring
  • EOP Academic Success Coach Program

Financial Aid Information

saving for collegeFinancial Aid is the reason why many of our students are able to attend college. Below is a sample breakdown of what a financial aid package may look like for an EOP student at Stony Brook University. Please keep in mind that financial aid packages will vary based on individual household income. Please be aware that student loans (both subsidized and unsubsidized) will be necessary to offset the cost of housing and the university meal plan. A full financial aid package with federal and state funding only (not including any scholarships) will not cover the entire cost of attendance if you choose to reside on campus (see sample breakdown below). This is why using student loans to invest in your future may be necessary. In most cases you will not begin repayment of these loans until after you complete your desired degree. Our EOP counselors will review your financial aid package extensively during the EOP/AIM Summer Academy.

Step 1: Apply (August-October)*
To apply to SBU, you will need to submit an application using the SUNY Application (and SUNY App Supplement), Common App, or the Coalition Application indicating your interest in being considered for EOP

-  We also require your high school transcript, showing achievement made for all high school coursework, and at least 1 letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher.

-  Stony Brook is test optional for applicants.  Admission to Stony Brook is based on a holistic review of a student's academic record including the overall grade point average and strength of curriculum, as well as other academic and personal factors such as co-curricular and community involvement, evidence of leadership, special talents or interest.

*Applicants for EOP are encouraged to follow our Early Action application deadline, however, students may still apply and have their application reviewed for academic eligibility after the deadline on a space available basis.

Step 2: Submit Financial Documents (December through March)
If deemed academically eligible, you will be instructed to submit:
           - FAFSA Application
           - Some students may also be requested to submit:
           - SBU's Financial Information Inquiry Form
            - Taxes and W-2's from prior year and other financial documentation as instructed

The Office of Financial Aid will then review your submitted documentation for financial eligibility for EOP.  If deemed eligible, they will inform the Office of Undergraduate Admissions so they may review you for possible admission.

Step 3: Reviewed for EOP Admission (January through April)
If deemed financially eligible, we will then review your application for admission to the EOP/AIM Program at SBU. Due to the high number of applications we receive, even if a student is deemed to be both academically and financially eligible, that does not guarantee admission
