IEEE and HKN Boat Places 5th in Roth Pond Regatta

A cardboard boat carrying four students built by a team from the student chapters of IEEE and Eta Kappa Nu (the electrical engineering professional and honor societies, respectively) placed 5 th out of about 100 boats in the 2014 Roth Pond Regatta on the Stony Brook Campus in early May.

Following Roth Pond Regatta tradition, the boat was constructed of cardboard and duct tape. It was painted black and carried the IEEE and HKN logos. Moreover it carried a representation of Pikachu holding a Pokeball. Most of the construction work went into the frame. The team worked about 4 hours a week on the boat and the whole night before the Regatta. The boat turned out to be pond worthy and didn’t leak.

Four boats competed in each round, with the winner of a round proceeding further in the competition. The IEEE/HKN boat placed first in the first and second rounds. In the final round there were 5 boats. There were about 100 entries.

The boat was crewed by Mike Dai (team leader), Lars Folkerts, Joseph Caracciolo and Edward Brunsden. The team also included Kevin Mui, Eric Fu, Tochukwu Akujuo, David Chiesa, Ted Graves, Saket Ati (next year’s IEEE President), Erluis Nacaj, Shiwei Fang and Zeev Douek.

The Roth Pond Regatta is an annual spring event at Stony Brook University.
