The Project

Opened July 1, 2015, the 70,000 square foot Computer Science building accelerates Stony Brook University’s growth in collaborative research in bioinformatics, smart energy, cyber engineering, physical sciences and the biomedicine field.

Designed to achieve a LEED Silver certification, the highly efficient building contains a mix of research and teaching labs, a wireless teaching lab, faculty offices and conference areas, including:

  • Digital media, light dome, graphics, sound booth and wireless sensor research labs
  • 27,000 gross square feet of research lab space, featuring 18 general-purpose computer science research labs and 2 teaching labs
  • 60 faculty and post doc offices
  • Computing practice, work spaces and collaborative learning spaces
  • A 4,000 square foot atrium lobby

Architect: Michell Giurgla Architects is known for developing solutions that minimize the use of non-renewable energy sources, reduce production of pollution and conserve energy. Eight of the partners are LEED accredited professionals, and the firm works with mechanical engineers to create truly integrated "green design" solutions, most of which are Gold and Silver certified by the LEED accreditation system.
