NEW CS BUILDING – CENTER DESCRIPTIONS
National Security Institute – The Department of Computer Science is preparing to spearhead the first university and statewide National Security Institute (NSI). The NSI vision and its core mission are bold: to secure our homeland by researching and developing technologies and insights for measurable, secure, available, trustworthy, and sustainable computing and communications systems. In the core stage NSI brings together experts from diverse fields spanning four colleges/schools (CEAS, CAS, Business, Health Technology), in collaboration with BNL, CEWIT and AERTC, as well as industry, and public organizations. Given the tremendous funding opportunities, in the medium to long term, NSI is set to become a world research and education leader in national security, defense technologies and beyond. |
Center for Mobile Computing – With the rapid progress of mobile device technologies, distributed software systems and wireless networking; mobile information processing now influences almost every facet of people’s lives. Diverse aspects include personal communications, social networks, entertainment, commerce, education, healthcare and governance. The Center for Mobile Computing facilitates interdisciplinary research and education focused on core enabling mobile technologies and their domain-specific use. |
Center for Smart Energy – The Center for Smart Energy connects a broad-based interdisciplinary research program with computer science, information technology, nanotechnology and engineering to design next generation energy systems. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, the Center is poised to explore renewable energy sources, enhance traditional fuels, and employ methodologies that are cutting edge and at the forefront of sustainable and smart grid initiatives. |
Center for Dynamic Data Analysis (CDDA) - CDDA's goal is to discover, develop and apply data analytics solutions to industry problems, transforming data chaos into knowledge. CDDA's members are leaders in their field who promote and conduct multidisciplinary research that analyzes and visualizes massive dynamic data. The motivation for this Center is the lack of scalable algorithms, methods and solutions for addressing ever increasing amounts of data that industry uses. Research is conducted at the pre-competitive stage and is applicable to many industrial sectors, including healthcare, finance, security and defense and communications. The Center provides an interface between industry and universities to cooperatively discover and solve data challenges. Funding for the Center was provided by industrial memberships and the NSF. The Center intends to grow its membership and research capacity proportionately and establish itself as the leading resource for dynamic data analytics. CDDA is a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) established between Rutgers University and Stony Brook University |
Center for Visual Computing - The Center for Visual Computing advances visual computing studies at Stony Brook University and promotes research and education in visual computing. Attracting major federal and state funding, industry leaders are motivated use the center as a collaborate vehicle with the Department of Computer Science which further fosters interdisciplinary interaction. Visual computing research activities include: visualization, computer graphics, image processing, medical imaging, virtual reality, user interfaces, computer-supported collaborative work, computer-aided design, multimedia and computational geometry. |
