The Times Higher Education (THE), a London-based magazine focused on reporting news and issues in higher education, has recently named Stony Brook University as a top 100 university in the Climate Action category of their 2020 Impact Rankings.
The Times Higher Education first introduced the Impact Rankings in 2019 as a way to track progress made by universities around the world. According to the THE website:
The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings are the only global performance tables that assess universities against the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across three broad areas: research, outreach and stewardship.
The 2020 edition of the rankings included 766 universities from 85 different countries. SBU’s top 100 ranking in the Climate Action category also earned the university the 8th best score amongst U.S. schools ranked by the publication.
SBU’s performance in the Climate Action section of the 2020 rankings is reflective of the important strides made by the university in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and a consistent focus on promoting energy conservation measures on campus. The THE specifically classifies this section of its rankings as:
The table on Climate Action (SDG 13) measures universities’ research on climate change, their use of energy and their preparations for dealing with the consequences of climate change.
The 2020 ranking marks the second consecutive top 100 finish for Stony Brook in the Climate Action category, a mark that shows the university’s commitment to environmental conservation amongst the campus community. In addition to Climate Action, SBU also recorded top 100 rankings in Reduced Inequalities (27th), Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure (59th), and Quality Education (95th).
