A formal definition of a First Generation college student is a student whose parent(s) did not complete a four-year college or university degree. At Stony Brook we open our First Generation awareness programing to all student and supporters who shape the path forward for their family unit.

First generation Seawolves bring diverse perspectives and experiences to campus. However, they may face unique challenges due to family members who haven’t been through the college experience themselves. This is why SBU provides extra mentorship and support to help these students succeed so that they can pave the way for future generations!

We are thrilled to announce SBU’s First Generation Week celebration taking place on

Monday, November 4th through Saturday, November 13th.

Events include a Fall brunch, a mixer & game night, and more! If you or anyone you know is a first generation Seawolf, be sure to join us in celebrating this amazing accomplishment! These events are open to all students, staff and faculty. Everyone’s participation is encouraged!
