TESOL Courses

Course Sequence for the Supplementary Certificate

Stony Brook University’s Department of Linguistics and its School of Professional Development have partnered to offer a five-course program that allows content area teachers to be eligible to teach English Language Learners (ELLs). This program will allow teachers to apply for the Supplementary Certificate in English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) through individual alternative pathways.

There is a critical shortage of teachers who are certified in a content area and able to provide integrated English as a New Language instruction. The New York State Education Department (2024) has published the following statistics:

  • Approximately 10.1 percent of New York State public school students are English Language Learners
  • There are 259,829 ELL students statewide (2023–2024)
  • New York City alone has 151,831 ELL students

Stony Brook University is a leader in TESOL education. New York State Education Department (NYSED) has pre-approved our courses, and the University is committed to responding to any changes to requirements made by NYSED as quickly as reasonably possible.
