Stony Brook University’s Educational Leadership (EDL) post-master's graduate certificate program prepares K-12 educators for advancement into positions at both the school building (SBL) and school district (SDL) levels. 

As the largest program of its kind available online in New York State, the Stony Brook EDL program offers flexibility for working professionals to obtain two certifications that meet the demand for competent, confident leaders in education.

This combined school district and school building leader post-master's certificate program prepares New York State certified  K-12 educators for two certifications that are necessary to pursue advancement into leadership positions such as:

  • Superintendent of Schools
  • District Superintendent
  • Assistant Superintendent
  • Principal
  • Assistant Principal
  • Department Chairperson
  • Athletic Director

Strengthening Diversity in School Leadership

Faculty from the Educational Leadership program have received a NYSED grant to support a multipronged initiative designed to:

  • Create a pipeline for emerging school leaders via our Ed Leadership program
  • Foster new leadership skills for APs and teacher-leaders
  • Conduct and disseminate research on the effective strategies being used in the field
