U.S. Supreme Court Decision on New York Firearm Permits

Dear Stony Brook University community,

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued its decision in New York State Rifle and Pistol Association v. Bruen, in which it ruled that New York’s approach to issuing permits to carry weapons violates the constitution. We are currently reviewing whether this ruling will have any effect on campus operations and policies. In the meantime, our Policy on weapons remains in effect.

In light of recent tragic events, many of us are feeling heightened anxiety about gun violence, especially in school and healthcare settings. Too many of us have personal experience with this issue and have passionate opinions spanning the full spectrum of viewpoints about what should be done, as well as intensely emotional responses to discussion of the subject.

Therefore, as our state moves forward to determine how best to comply with this ruling while maintaining public safety, I encourage our Stony Brook community to discuss the subject with civility and sensitivity, and in keeping with our University’s values of free speech and open inquiry, as well as its Policy governing peaceful assembly.
