To the Campus Community,

The National Weather Service is forecasting a cold front that is headed for our region later tonight into Friday morning.  Our area also expects gusting winds Friday evening and dangerously cold wind chill temperatures dipping into the single digits or below late Friday into Saturday (2/4/23). The Division of Enterprise Risk Management continues to monitor the forecast for our area.

Please monitor weather alerts and stay indoors as much as possible during this time. If outside, layer clothing (leaving no exposed skin) as frostbite can occur in 15 minutes or less with wind chills this low. Visit our Environmental Health & Safety website for more resources on cold weather preparation, including safety and prevention.

Resources/Information:

  • Emergencies  - in the event of an emergency, contact UPD at 631-632-3333, or 333 from any on-campus phone.
  • Be prepared. Check your “Winter Car Safety” kit:
    • Fill your gas tank.
    • Check jumper cables and batteries.
    • Replenish supplies if needed (blankets, water, flashlights, road flares).
  • SB Guardian - download the app, and alert friends to your whereabouts if you're outside.
  • Facilities - please check that building windows and doors are closed and tightly secured to ensure the cold air does not result in frozen pipes in any of our campus buildings.  Notify your Building Manager or Campus Operations and Maintenance of any issues or concerns. Please report any urgent facilities issues to:
    • Campus Residences: Please call (631) 632-9585
    • West Campus and Research and Development Park: Please call (631) 632-6400
    • HSC and Hospital: (631) 444-2400
As always, please be on the lookout for future advisories (e.g., SB Alert) from our Office of Emergency Management.

Sincerely,

Lawrence M. Zacarese
