Supporting Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
SBU is committed to providing support and investments to encourage faculty in the Creative Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences to actively apply for external research grants, pursue their research goals, and support collaboration in multidisciplinary research projects.
The Office of the Provost, in collaboration with OVPR, is announcing the following new initiatives:
- Creation for a new OVPR seed grant program for research in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. At least three grants will be funded, with each grant providing up to $20,000 to support creative efforts targeting external grants and awards.
- Funding for three grants supporting the development of new mentoring mechanisms. This program targets senior faculty members interested in developing a mentoring program for early and mid-career faculty applying for Guggenheim, NEA, NEH and other programs. Each award will provide up to $10,000 in research funds to the mentor and $5,000 for the implementation of the mentoring program.
- Two $25,000 grants will be awarded to promote, in collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, the development of new research teams to explore interdisciplinary areas of scholarly work and tackle grand challenge areas such as as Digital Futures/Ethical AI, Sustainability, Critical Health Studies/Health Disparities, Global Migration, Carceral Studies, etc. The request for proposals for the Provostial Seed Grants for Interdisciplinary Work in Creative Arts, Social Sciences, and Humanities can be found here.
These initiatives, which add to the existing support mechanisms such as FAHSS, the Humanities Institute and other SBU organizations, are inspired by recommendations from a Stony Brook working group of artists, humanists and social scientists convened during summer 2021. These programs were launched during the Spring 22 semester.
