Mónica Bugallo
Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation
Mónica Bugallo was named Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation at Stony
Brook University in December 2025. She is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering
and was previously Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Staff Development.
Bugallo received her PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of A Coruña, Spain. She has authored or coauthored two book chapters and more than 250 journal papers and refereed conference articles. She is a senior member of IEEE, an elected member-at-large of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Board of Governors, and has an extensive record of professional service, including leadership roles, editorial appointments, and the organization of major international conferences and workshops.
Bugallo's research focuses on statistical signal processing, with a particular emphasis on Monte Carlo methods and their applications across disciplines such as biomedicine, ecology, sensor networks, and finance. In addition, she has advanced STEM education by initiating successful programs that engage students at all academic stages in the excitement of engineering and research, with special attention to broadening participation among high need communities.
