Statement on the Naming of Campus Buildings
July 21, 2020
As a higher education institution, we have a long history of honoring and memorializing those who have contributed to both our University and society at large. But now, as we continue to learn and build a campus reflective of our values, it is very important that we cultivate a critical, productive conversation about how, and whom, we commemorate on our campus while also asking deep questions about the act of memorialization itself. To this end, I have asked our Chief Diversity Officer, Judi Brown Clarke, to create a cross-stakeholder committee to help develop principles that can guide our future process for renaming any building, space, or structure on our campus.
Sincerely,
Maurie McInnis, PhD
President
