New Student Placement Assessments
Upon entering Stony Brook University, new students will be required to take different placement assessments to ensure they are placed in the proper course in Stony Brook University's curriculum sequence for different disciplines. Students may have to take up to 4 different placement assessments which are described below.
Math Placement Assessment
Determine your level of preparedness for mathematics and math-related courses at Stony Brook University. Accurately reflect your level of preparedness and ability, because you will be most successful at the university if you take courses best suited to you.
SBU Mathematics AssessmentChemistry Placement & Preparation Process
Students at Stony Brook University are placed in one of three General Chemistry I offerings as their first chemistry class towards their major. The OCPP helps place students in the most appropriate course, preparing them for a good performance in the class.
OCPP ProcessWriting Placement Exam
New first year and transfer students who have not been placed into WRT 102 through one of the established mechanisms or satisfied the SBU writing requirement (WRT 102) by transfer credit will take an online writing placement exam.

The Foreign Language Placement Exam is designed to assess each student’s current foreign language ability with one of the numerous language courses available at SBU and accurately identify students who satisfy their Skill 3/LANG requirement.
