October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
- Over 19,000 phone calls are placed to Domestic Violence hotlines in the United
States. - More than 10 million women and men are physically abused by an intimate
partner every year -- which equates to nearly 20 people per minute. - 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience some form of intimate partner
physical violence, sexual violence of stalking. - 1 in 2 female murder victims are killed by an intimate partner.
- 20% of homicides involving domestic violence included the death a of friend of
family member.

Take A Stand / Walk With Me

The Office of Equity and Access is pleased to participate once again in CPO's Annual Take A Stand / Walk with Me event on October 27, 2021 at 1 pm on the SAC Plaza as part of our recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The event will includes remarks for student leaders and the march which will be led by the Spirit of Stony Brook Drummers. The march will start at approximately 1:05pm and will last about 25 -30 minutes. After the march, there will be a brief resource fair on the SAC Plaza which will feature representatives from campus (including OEA) and community resources. |

OEA to Establish a Sexual Misconduct / Title IX Prevention and Policy Task Force
The Office of Equity and Access is working to establish a task force to review Stony Brook University's policies, procedures and prevention efforts for Sexual Misconduct. The task force will be comprised of faculty, staff and students from across many areas of campus in order to provide various perspectives on what is working and what could be working better to promote reporting of incidents of sexual misconduct, raise awareness and prevent and reduce incidents on campus.
New Deputy Title IX Coordinator's Identified

Deputy Title IX Coordinators are university-wide contact points for those seeking information or reporting sexual harassment, misconduct, or violence. Deputy Title IX Coordinators provide the opportunity for many individuals in our University community to report an incident to an individual they may have interacted with in the past and feel more comfortable talking to. |
The Office of Equity and Access is always looking to expand the cadre of Deputy Title IX Coordinators available to our campus community. Since the start of Fall 2021 we have identified new Deputies in many areas throughout the University. A complete list of Deputies -- new and continuing -- is available on OEA's Contact Us page.
The role of a Deputy is to inform complainants of their rights and options. The Deputy will then communicate all Title IX-related information to OEA. The deputies do not investigate, adjudicate, or sanction (unless that function is within their normal job duties, responsibilities). Deputy Coordinators are chosen by Stony Brook University's Assistant Vice President, Title IX, and ADA Coordinator, Marjolie Leonard.
Title IX Grievance Process Updated
| In response to regulations issued by the US Department of Education in 2020 Stony Brook University updated its Code of Student Responsibility to include the Title IX Grievance Policy and Procedure. Recent guidance from the US Department of Education and Federal courts have created a need for Stony Brook University to update the Title IX Grievance Policy and Procedure in order to comply with current law. |  |
Notably these changes impact the admissibility of statements provided to the
investigator when an individuals is not available at hearing and the information that
is
provided to parties prior to their initial meeting with the investigator. If you have

Reporting Domestic Violence
and Other Forms of Sexual Misconduct or Discrimination

Stony Brook University is committed to fostering diverse and inclusive learning and working environments that are safe, accessible and free from discrimination, including domestic violence and all forms of sexual misconduct. As part of that commitment, OEA wants to ensure that anyone who does experience or witness discrimination is aware of where to go to report an incident and get help. If you should experience or witness any form of discrimination, the Office of Equity and Access has a 24/7 website - www.stonybrook.edu/reportit - that allows anyone from the Stony Brook University community to report any incident of discrimination, including sexual misconduct from any internet connected device.

As part of our commitment to preventing all forms of sexual misconduct, OEA has developed a suite of online training programs called ReportIt: Ending Sexual Misconduct. ReportIt provides important information, includes useful resources and outlines Stony Brook University policy and procedures. |
Required Annual Program for All Employees
New York State law requires all employers to provide this programming to all employees
annually. Employees who have not already completed ReportIt for the 2021 calendar
year should completed the program before November 8, 2020
ReportIt: Ending Sexual Misconduct for Faculty & Staff
Required Programming for Onboarding Students, Student Athletes and Eboard Members
New York State requires all students new to campus to participate in sexual violence prevention and awareness training. As leaders in our student community student athletes and Eboard members are also required to participate in Reportit on an annual basis. All student required to participate should complete the program by November 8, if they have not done so already. You may complete your ReportIt requirement using the link below.

Complaint Procedure for Allegations of Discrimination
University Title IX & ADA Coordinator
The University has designated Marjolie Leonard, Assistant Vice President of OEA as Title IX and ADA Coordinator. Ms. Leonard oversees the University's overall Title IX and ADA compliance efforts, which include, but are not limited to: investigating/responding to reports, inquiries and complaints, ensuring appropriate policies and procedures are in place, and conducting training programs for students and employees.
